Multi use games areas are great for schools and sports clubs as they offer a more cost effective sport space for people to use. Since multiple sports can be played in one area, you will not have to pay for a number of facilities to be installed – instead you will only need to pay for the one construction. MUGAs are also great if you have limited space available.

What is a MUGA Surface?

There are a number of MUGA surfaces which we install for schools and sports clubs across the United Kingdom. Tarmacadam surfaces are popular in schools since they are relatively cheap to install and various sports can be played including tennis, netball and basketball. For macadam and polymeric courts, colour coatings could be applied to create additional grip and improve the overall look and playing qualities.

We also offer 2G and 3G pitch surfacing. 3G pitches are great for football and rugby, whereas hockey should be played on 2G pitches. Our team also offer needlepunch surfaces for multisport activities. These can be installed in various colours depending on your individual preferences.

How is a MUGA Installed?

When installing a multi-use area, it is important to make certain that a professional, qualified team carries out the work. This will ensure the facility lasts a long time and the surfacing will not suffer any problems due to poor construction. We carry out groundworks prior to the MUGA installation to ensure a suitable sub base is installed. Our team will excavate the existing surface and stone up to the required depths. A tarmacadam sub base can then be installed to create a solid foundation to lay onto.

After the sub base and foundation installations are complete, we can lay your choice of multisport surfacing. This may be a synthetic turf carpet, polymeric surfacing or needlepunch carpet. If you are having a macadam surface installed, you may want to think about the installation of non slip paint. Once the surface has been laid and painted if required, line markings may be applied.

MUGA Specs

We can apply various designs to create the perfect multisport facility for your establishment. When thinking about the various specifications we have available, you will need to consider the sports you wish to play on the area. This is to ensure you get the best surface spec for your facility. Once you have chosen the MUGA court specification for surfacing, you may also need to consider specs of additional features of the MUGAs. These may include painting, line markings, fencing, floodlights and more.

How to Repair a MUGA Surface

No matter whether you have an artificial grass pitch or a tarmac court, we can offer a number of repairs to bring your surface back to its former glory. It is very common for macadam surfaces to begin to crack over time. We can use a specialist binder and emerald stone to repair the cracks. We can also offer resurfacing if the cracks are beyond repair.

When it comes to synthetic surfaces like 3G pitches we offer different types of MUGA surfacing repair. We are able to carry out repairs of tears in the surface and complete full resurfaces. It is also common for these to flood if you don’t apply the correct maintenance. In the event of waterlogging, we complete rejuvenation to improve the porosity of the surfacing.

What is a MUGA?

A MUGA is a sports surface which is suitable for multiple different activities. These usually have a number of different sets of line markings and come in a selection of specifications.

  • Type 1 and type 2 multi use games areas which are a macadam surface finish with primary sports for tennis, basketball and netball, coloured anti slip coatings can be applied for added grip.
  • Type 3 and type 4 MUGAs which have a polymeric surface finish with primary activities for netball, 5-a-side football and basketball. We can apply additional paint to these to enhance playability.

Another of the services we can provide is the installation of additional equipment and extras. This can help complete the court and enable you to use it to its maximum potential. These can include specialist sports floodlighting and secure rebound fencing which keep the area safe and allow the surface to be used outside of daylight hours which gives the potential to generate extra revenue for your club or school.

Anti slip paint coatings are also available for macadam and polymeric court surfaces in a range of bright colours. We can also apply line markings for different activities like basketball, netball and tennis. All Purpose Pitch Services

All weather pitch multi sport artificial turf has evolved significantly over the last few years. The new era of synthetic surfacing has overtaken the old grit artificial turf surfacing. Old all weather pitch artificial turf pitches are now constantly receiving upgrades. Organisations are choosing to turn them into all weather pitches for multi use. As well as building new MUGA courts, we can also carry out all purpose pitch services to clean, maintain and repair existing facilities which have become dirty or damaged through heavy use, weathering or vandalism.

It’s important to put a thorough and regular maintenance plan into place for your outdoor MUGA facility. This should keep it safe and prevent it from becoming contaminated and holding water. The multi use games area facilities are common for many parks throughout the UK. You are able to play in all weather pitch conditions throughout the year. This isn’t the case with a natural grass surface as these can flood with water.

This video below shows the process of installing a polymeric rubber surface in Stockport, Cheshire. The surfacing was installed with a macadam sub base, SBR shockpad and a structural spray coating of EPDM rubber in the chosen colour of blue. Line markings were then applied in white, red and yellow. These allow the users to play a variety of sports on the court. Polymeric rubber surfacing is ideal for activities like basketball, netball and tennis.
