Basketball Court Construction to School Playground

Many organisations in the UK choose to have basketball court construction projects carried out to renovate existing sports surfaces or to create a brand new facility. Basketball surfaces can be used for multiple different sports and activities such as tennis, football and netball which means a school or club can use them for a lot of different purposes. One particular school in Manchester recently approached us to do a basketball court construction on their existing playground surface.

Polymeric Basketball Court Construction

The school chose to have their multi-use basketball facility installed in polymeric rubber sports surfacing as this is a strong and versatile flooring specification. It is made up of an EPDM rubber crumb which is mixed together with a binder and then laid out onto a suitable base. Polyurethane anti slip paint coatings and line markings can then be applied to enhance the grip and traction of the sport surfacing.

For this particular project, we started the basketball court construction by excavating the surface of the playground to the right depth for the installation. The next step was to put in a specially designed stone sub base which gives the court a stable foundation and allows water to drain away quickly and easily during wet weather.

Once we had put down the layer of porous angular stones to create the sub-base, we then applied a layer of macadam to act as an even base before the polymeric surfacing was laid out. We also installed specialist sports rebound fencing with the basketball court construction to absorb impact from use with a lot of different sports, and to keep the facility safe during use and when it is out of use. The fencing specification included goal recesses for football and basketball hoops to allow the area to be used for multiple activities. When the groundworks and fencing had been installed, the next step was to lay out the polymeric rubber crumb surfacing in blue, this was then left to cure. After the polymeric surfacing layer had dried, sports line-markings were applied in white and yellow for basketball and football so that the facility could be used as an all-purpose playing court.

When the surfacing installation was complete, the finished product was a state of the art multi-use polymeric court with professional sports line-markings and equipment. The school are extremely happy with their new basketball court facility and will be putting it to good use during lessons, break times and after school clubs. The durability and longevity of the polymeric surfacing will ensure that the sports court performs well and remains safe for use for as long as possible. Carrying out correct cleaning and maintenance will help to improve the playing qualities and increase the life expectancy of the surfacing. You can look after a polymeric sports court by regularly brushing the surface and pressure washing the area to remove dirt and contaminants which could affect the drainage qualities and damage the flooring.
