Impact Attenuating Playground Surfacing

Impact attenuating playground surfacing is a type of safety surface to meet the CFH critical fall height of play area equipment which is tested under BS EN 1177. Injuries caused by falls from the playground equipment is investigated and this determines the free fall space and CFH needed to be met which makes the depth of impact absorbing surfacing needed to be installed. The HIC test Head Injury Criterion is used for these tests.

The construction of the play areas in a nursery, school, outdoor classroom, leisure centre or park can vary dependent on the drainage and structure needed so MOT bases could be used, a tarmac macadam engineered sub base or a concrete layer which is usually no fines concrete to make the whole system porous.

Impact attenuating playground surfacing could be anything from wet pour safety surface, in situ rubber crumb surfaces, rubber mulch surfacing, play sand, loose bark, insitu synthetic surfacing, grass mat flooring, artificial grass floor or preformed rubber tiles.
