00:02 Hi, guys. It’s Tom from Soft Surfaces here. And on today’s video we’re going to be showing you a daily mile installation at Appleton Thorn Primary, Warrington. The first thing we did for this job is actually dig out the base of the track itself. So this was actually in a very large field. You can see from these photos here, we’re digging out our base ready to actually install the track into that area. So this is a very large area, which means obviously you have to use this machinery here as you can see, digging up the base. Ready for us then to actually begin the installation process itself. So these are a very popular surface type for schools, obviously because it keeps the kids fit, and it gives them a lot of exercise throughout their recreational and educational use really. So next up we then lay down the membrane, which you can see us actually doing here on this photo. And then after that, we begin to create the stone sub-base. This is essentially the layer that goes on prior to the rubber mulch being installed to the surface. And this essentially works as a protective layer to ensure that weed do not grow through the surface. Obviously improving the longevity of the surface generally as well. So you can see that actually being applied now, and the process is starting to come together very nicely. You see from this next shot here in a minute that we actually start to use drone footage to actually show the entire track, as you can see there. We use it basically to kind of show the scale of the track that we’re installing here, and obviously the stone base is laid at this particular moment of the job. So next up our team are actually raking up the a stone base, obviously getting it ready for the rubber mulch to be installed. And now far as applying the rubber mulch itself. So we obviously pour that on there with the mixer. And it’s obviously ready, and we obviously then screed that onto these stones sub-base and let the kind of glue settle and dry in the sun, ready for it to kind of just settle in. And basically the surface is then completely installed. So you can see, it is a very large job for us. We got some more drone footage here of us actually screening that off, flying it down making sure it’s all properly installed. And now finally for the completed project. So you can see again using our drone here, we’re going to take that up to the sky and show you the scale of the job. There it is installed. A really, really big job for is this one. And they were very, very pleased with the outcome. Obviously it does like I said, give the kids the ability to be using this for educational and recreational use. And just generally a great facility to have during playtime or lunchtime, or whatever it may be. Here at Soft Surfaces, we’re a nationwide company that install these surface types and many other surface types across the United Kingdom. So if you have any questions about this, or you’d like to have a look at kind of getting one installed or maintained. Please just drop us a message. You can find our website in the description of this video. Finally guys, as you can see from the video here, this black part of the installation is actually for vehicle access. And this is great. Obviously, it means the vehicles can drive across the surface itself to obviously maintain the grass in the middle, or something like that. And it just means that the actual surface isn’t getting damaged as the vehicle is using it, keeping it in the best condition possible, really. So finally guys, after a lot of experiences on these sports facilities across the United Kingdom, we actually rank in Google for these key phrases, “Rubbing mulch track construction U.K. Warrington school surfacing specialists. Nationwide running track company. Sports surfacing installers Warrington. Athletics track builders in the United Kingdom.” And even more than that. So as I mentioned earlier guys, if you are interested in this surface type or other surface types, please just find our website in the description of this video. Drop us an email, and we’ll come back to you as soon as we can. Thanks a lot for watching!

Rubber Mulch Safety Surface Designs

Over time, Rubber Mulch has become a popular type of surfacing to have at schools due to the wide amount of benefits it can offer. But what are these benefits?

Today’s post will explore more into this question and give you a better understanding of the growing popularity of this surface and why it’ll continue to grow! Carry on reading to learn more about rubber mulch safety surface designs and how these products are used.

Bonded Mulch Playground Surfaces

Surfaces that are covered in Bonded Mulch can vary from place to place due to the customisation options that it offers for you. For example, colours. Picking your flooring can be difficult as certain surfaces only allow for a certain colour to be chosen but with Rubber Play Bark, that’s different.

As well as this, Rubber Mulch is environmentally friendly. Using recused truck tyres, it avoids the need to burn them, causing immense pollution to occur. Instead, they are shredded up and then used for the flooring. Due to this, the surface can last for a while as rubber like this won’t rot or decompose at a fast rate. This usually means that over time, this surface can withstand a lot more natural deterioration compared to a lot of others.

Playgrounds are a great place to be surfaced with this material as it also feels incredibly nice for the users. Children will often find themselves intrigued by the flooring and enjoy the feeling of it, improving their knowledge of the world around them. Keeping this in mind, sensory development is a key feature of playgrounds so having a flooring that not only looks interesting but feels interesting is important. See this post to learn more about different learning activities children can do on the playground.

Rubber Play Bark Safety Flooring

Grass and mud can be dangerous for kids to play on top of in wet conditions as they can end up slipping and hurting themselves in a serious way. Often, this can lead to you having to look for a new surface to replace the current one to avoid these types of accidents. However, it can be an expensive procedure as many of the surfaces require a certain sub-base for them to be installed on top of them. Rubber Mulch safety surfacing is different though.

Applicable on any surface, you can avoid these slip injuries quite easily. Grass, mud and other surfaces which can be dangerous can be surfaced with no problem. Water on the surface will be absorbed by the mulch, resulting in no puddles/wet areas being formed. Chances of slipping are reduced massively as there aren’t many chances for kids to slip on it.

Not only is it slip-resistant, but the actual surfacing itself quite soft. Those who may fall over on it will notice that the ground isn’t as hard or painful to fall on compared to other surfaces. Being well renowned for absorbing the impact of falls and tumbles, many schools and sport facilities often like to have this surface installed to avoid any players gaining an injury.

Rubber Mulch Play Areas in Schools

Schools will put pupil safety first above entertainment. Ofsted believe this as well and safety precautions can really help boost the rating of your school. However, some of the safer surfaces and equipment can cost a lot of money and can often become useless at certain times (winter, rain etc.). Rubber Mulch play areas in school however can solve these problems and can give a safe access to the playground for the pupils.

As previously stated, rain isn’t a huge issue with Bonded Mulch as the surface itself is porous and allows for the absorption of water through the material. Avoiding puddles forming is incredibly useful as it can keep the playground operating properly and stops anything from preventing it and leading to injury.

With winter approaching, most surfaces can become incredibly dangerous as ice will start to form over it and cause the area to become slippery. If someone falls over on this type of ground, the injury can become a lot more serious. Rubber Play Bark is quite good with this though. Certain de-icer sprays can be applied to it without any issues, meaning the flooring keeps its friction and softness.

Safe Mulch Play Surfacing

Compared to most other types of surfaces, Rubber Mulch safety surface designs are becoming more and more popular over time. With its properties not only benefit children’s safety but benefitting their imaginations and senses, many schools are deciding to have this flooring on their playgrounds. One of the strongest selling points, however, is how it’s able to be applied on almost any other surface without causing any issues.

Certain pieces of equipment might be difficult to place some surfacing around it, but safe mulch play surfacing avoids this issue and allows you to make sure that your equipment is safe to use. It’s important however to always perform regular checks on the play area to see if any damage has been caused.

Spotting the damage and acting straight away can avoid any more unnecessary damage being caused and can result in the surface being able to only have minor repairs done on it. We at Soft Surfaces can help with any part of this process, ranging from the planning, installation, maintenance and repairs. Over 20 years of experience makes us stand out from the rest of the industry and you’ll tell when our knowledgeable staff are able to provide the exact service you are looking for!

Benefits of Rubber Mulch Playgrounds

When it comes to playing area surfacing, there are so many different types of materials that you can choose from, ranging from wet pour to artificial grass. However, one type of surfacing that seems to be quite popular for playgrounds is rubber mulch.

The material is incredibly versatile and once you know the benefits this material offers; rubber play bark becomes a lot more appealing and suitable for a wide range of applications.

What is Rubber Mulch?

Rubber Mulch is a type of surface that can be installed mainly on playgrounds that are made up entirely of shredded rubber. As well as this, the rubber bark particles are bonded together with a special resin so there is no rotting, movement or loss of particles.

In addition, bonded mulch is a porous material meaning that it can dry out quickly in case it starts to rain, or water makes contact. This keeps the surface clean and dry and allows kids to carry on playing.

Another thing about this surface is that it comes bonded together to form a tightly packed material. This is different from other loose chipping surfaces as it means material won’t get lost from the area leading to the need for a top-up.

Why is Bonded Mulch Good for Playgrounds?

Bonded Mulch offers many major benefits to playgrounds, which can reflect a positive image to the community. These benefits include:

  • Eco-friendly – The mulch is made up of shredded recycled rubber, meaning the material isn’t harvested in a damaging way.
  • Cost-effective – When it comes to installing the surface, minimal groundwork preparation is required, in addition to no edging needing to be installed. It can also be overlaid on existing surfaces without interfering with drainage systems.
  • Range of depths – It can be installed at the correct depth to suit the Critical Fall Height (CFH) of any play equipment in the area.
  • Looks natural – Every piece of shredded rubber is unique, giving it a natural appearance; it stays in place as it prevents material spread to surrounding areas.
  • Absorbs impact – Mulch provides a soft impact in case anyone falls over on the surface, reducing the risk of injury to kids if they fall off any equipment.
  • Porous – The surfacing is permeable as if installed on a free draining sub-base allows the surface to dry out quickly, keeping the whole surface clean and dry.
  • Flexible – It can easily be installed around play equipment, on mounds and gradients, putting less stress on the installation process.
  • Usable in all weather – Rubber mulch is an anti-slip surface, keeping playground safety high and making sure children don’t end up hurting themselves. The porous properties also prevent flooding and puddles in the area.
  • Minimal maintenance – The particles within the material are bonded together with a special resin, eliminating movement, loss of particles or rotting. Bare patches are also prevented in areas of high activity.

Rubber Play Bark Safety Surfacing

As mentioned before, rubber play bark is well-known for being one of the safest surfaces you can install on a playground. The flooring type complies with play regulations, including BS EN 1177 and British and European standards. Have a look at this post to see some of the different designs you might see for this surface.

Following this, the rubberised bark surfacing is incredibly soft. If a child does fall on this surface, the likelihood of an injury occurring is far lower compared to other hard surfaces like tarmac. It will be able to absorb the impact and prevent the child from feeling most of the pain.

Unlike other types of surfacing like wet pour, mulch can be applied directly onto grass. This is great for playgrounds which are located on grass and can’t have wet pour applied to them due to that fact. Bonded mulch can make many playgrounds safer.

Another good point to keep in mind is how it can be applied around equipment. Some pieces of equipment might be quite difficult to reinforce with safety surfacing. However, this product is incredibly flexible, so it can be fitted in places that other surfacing options might miss.

School Play Area Mulch

Rubber play bark is an incredible safety surface and most playgrounds could really benefit from it. Aesthetically pleasing whilst also being incredibly safe, kids can not only feel reassured about the surface but enjoy the rustic appearance. Visit this RoSPA page to find out more about safe play areas.

Okay, so we all know that Health & Safety has become a little…overzealous over the last few years. If they want to put a poster up using pins, teachers have to wear safety goggles. (I’m not kidding, by the way). We’ve all sat and listened to Grandad rant about how ridiculous all the regulations are while he regales us with stories of ‘how he used to play in the rubble of bombed-out houses after the Second World War and no harm ever came to him,’ but times are different now.

When it comes to your little one’s safety in the playground, then you can understand the need for strict guidelines. We sometimes forget that children’s bodies are still growing and a broken arm at this early stage of life could result in the bone healing unnaturally causing complications later in life.

Combine this with the culture of being suing for the smallest of things, and it’s in your interest to make sure that a playground is as safe as it can possibly be. We can provide more information on play area safety surfaces if necessary, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The Project

Take our recent project at a primary school in Brighton as an example. The play area was much like any other school’s; a climbing net and three climbing walls but no safety flooring. While the equipment itself was in good condition, the flooring was severely lacking in redeeming features.

Dirt, weeds, pebbles, stones, and, most worrying of all, large blocks of concrete where the foundations for the equipment had been poured. Now that’s all fine and dandy if you’re on an SAS assault course, but this is in a school playground. If Little Billy decides one day that he’s Spider-man and he tests his super jumping abilities from the top of the climbing wall onto this surface, you’re going to have a problem. And possibly a solicitor’s letter.

Restoration

The team at Soft Surfaces replaced the nightmare-inducing flooring with a far safer rubber mulch. The mulch is made from old shredded truck tyres bonded together in a flexible resin that resembles traditional wooden bark chips. The beauty of the rubber mulch is that your child doesn’t come home with half a forest stuck to their socks and because the mulch is made from recycled tyres, it’s good for the environment (and Little Billy’s back) too. It also won’t attract insects or blow away like Dorothy and Toto at the first sign of a stiff breeze as traditional mulch is prone to doing.

Get a Quote Now

Colour options are plentiful, the most popular ones being green and brown which helps the mulch blend into natural surroundings, but other colour combinations are available.

Our client chose a vibrant green finish which really brought the area to life after the unsightly mess that was there before. Because the mulch is bonded and sealed, it should retain that vibrant colour for many years to come too.

Please have a look at the video below if you are interested in seeing how our team restored this playground:

The rubber-bonded mulch shred was laid inside a pre-existing bordered space which provided a superb, neat finish, but the massive advantage the mulch has is that it’s also able to be laid directly straight on to grassy surfaces and it will stay put. It can be laid directly on top of mud, tarmac, even unsightly flooded areas, and because the mulch is permeable, that area won’t flood again. No expensive groundwork to pay out for, flooding solved AND it looks better? Win/Win.

Yet another advantage of the versatility of this material is that it meant that the existing equipment could stay where it was and we could work around it. So, no breaking ground to remove the climbing walls and nets, no smashing up of foundations and no pouring fresh ones which would keep the area off-limits until it had dried and set.

The climbing equipment simply stayed in situ and the rubber mulch was installed around it. This helped us to keep costs down for the school and the inconvenience of the equipment being out of action was kept to a minimum.

The Finished Result

Once the mulch had set, the school had a surface that was colourful, weather-resistant, durable and, most importantly, safe for the children. The surface should require only minimal future maintenance and feedback from the school praised our high standard of work and how we had taken the time to actually explain the process to them rather than just get on with the job.

We asked them to rate us out of five on our communication, Health & Safety, tidiness & cleanliness, and finally, the quality of the work itself. Their reply? A full house, sweeping fives across the board. Can anyone else hear the Strictly Come Dancing music? No? Just me then…

Video Transcript

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Brown and Green Rubber Mulch Bench Surround in Birmingham.

So for this job the client got in touch with us looking for a new surface to surround their park bench, and wanted something that looked natural without the typical maintenance needed. We explained the rubber mulch we could offer, and very shortly after got to work installing.

So rubber mulch is a surface type consisting of recycled rubber chippings, coloured and blended together to create a natural-looking surface.

Rubber mulch has many benefits, the first of which being the fact that despite giving off this natural appearance, rubber mulch is largely maintenance-free. Occasional brushing off of the surface is all that’s required for rubber mulch, which is perfect for those wanting a that natural look but without the added effort.

In addition to this, rubber mulch is a very safe surface for those walking on it due to it’s rubber qualities, which ensures it absorbs falls and trips really well. It’s also simply a great surface to walk on, giving a nice feedback under-foot.

Finally, this surface option is also porous, and water is absorbed through the mulch during our more difficult months. This makes it an ideal outdoor surface option here in the UK.

We’ve been fitting rubber mulch to surfaces of all shapes and sizes nationwide for over 20 years now, so if you are interested please feel free to get in touch with us.

You can see now that the job has been completed, and looks really fantastic in the park it was installed at. The client was very happy with the final result.

Despite us working nationwide, from doing lots of jobs in the Birmingham area we now rank in Google for the following keywords:

  • Rubber Mulch Surfacing in Birmingham
  • Birmingham Rubber Safety Surfaces
  • Best Rubber Play Bark Installers Birmingham
  • Birmingham Outdoor Park Surfacing
  • Rubber Mulch Specialists Birmingham
  • And more.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Rubber Mulch Trim Trail Installation in Nottingham.

So the client came to us for this job interested in having a new surface fitted for their outdoor play area, and when we explained the surface types we can offer them, they got us booked in to complete the work.

For this particular install, we fitted a rubber mulch trim trail surface. Here at Soft Surfaces we’ve been installing this flooring nationwide for over 2 decades now, and are proud to have become market leaders over that time.

Rubber mulch is a surface made up of recycled rubber, and as a playground surface has many benefits, including:

Rubber mulch is a fantastic safety surface as a result of it’s rubber qualities, and our installations meet the critical fall height requirement needed for playgrounds within the UK. So overall, rubber mulch is an extremely safe surface.

Benefits of a Rubber Mulch Trim Trail in Nottingham

Having a resin bound surface installed in the Nottingham area has many benefits, these include the following:

Low Maintenance

Due to the fact that rubber mulch takes so long to breakdown, it is common for a rubber mulch surface to look the same a whole decade apart with next to no maintenance needed. Of course this is completely dependent on your spending the money on a quality surface and installation as some cheaper died mulches might fade over time. If you opted with an organic mulch surface you would have to change the surface every year or two, so you will end up saving a lot on money by opting for a rubber mulch trim trail in Nottingham.

Insulates well

If you want to protect your plant’s roots from heat and dehydration, rubber mulch is definitely something you should consider, as well as in the winter rubber mulch protects them from frost etc. However we also make sure to recommend clients to not choose a dark rubber mulch colour when living in a hot climate, this is because the rubber mulch absorbs heat and can often overheat the soil.

Increases Safety in Play Areas

The biggest advantage of rubber mulch is that it protects children from falls from high places in play areas. Another advantage for parents is that rubber mulch is clean, so it wont stain your kids clothes, in addition rubber mulch stays in place so your children won’t be dragging it through the house after playing in the play area all day.

We can plan the entire installation out with you via email or on the phone, so if you are interested, please feel free to get in touch.

You can see now that the job has been installed, and the client love their new play area surface. They went for this mixed finish, which looks great around their grass.

Video Transcript

Hi, guys, it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Rubber Mulch Daily Mile Track Installation in Leeds.

For this work, this client sent us an email to discuss their options for a daily mile track. We explained exactly what we could do for them, as we as their surfacing options for the track, and we were quickly booked in to install the surface.

So daily mile tracks are becoming a bigger and bigger trend here in the UK, as schools and facilities across the country are looking to encourage more outdoor activity for youngsters to help improve their health and fitness.

With obesity rates rising in the United Kingdom, it’s never been more important for our youth to exercise. Many organisations across the country have cited just how important these daily mile tracks can be, and here’s why:

So a daily mile track is a sports track installed to encourage kids to run 1 mile a day and is already helping many Schools and sports clubs to achieve this goal through group activity.

Here at Soft Surfaces, we’ve been installing Daily Mile tracks nationwide for years now, are proud to have become a market leader in the industry.

We’re able to fit these tracks in multiple surface specifications, but for this job, we opted for rubber mulch. Rubber mulch is a perfect surface for children to be running on as its spongy rubber make up absorbs trips and falls brilliantly.

This surface type can be installed in several different colours as well, and this can be planned out with you before we get to work.

You can see now the final works have been completed, and the rubber mulch daily mile track looks tremendous at the client’s facility. They were buzzing with the work we carried out for them, and with their new running track.

Rubber Mulch Costs

At Soft Surfaces, we understand the importance of managing costs.

Years of experience and knowledge has allowed us to develop customised pricing criteria. This is to meet the needs of customers at the best cost, matching high quality with best value for money.

Cost for Bound Rubber Mulch

The average cost of rubber mulch is between £40 and £60 per m2.

This will depend on a few different factors which you must take into account. There are many variables that can affect the rubber mulch costs.

When thinking about your spending budgets, you have to consider the following:

  • Size of the area.
  • Location in the UK
  • Preparation works required*
  • Access requirements
  • Time of year

The price will be cheaper for smaller areas but you will find the cost per m2 will be more expensive. This is due to the economies of scale.

Our team try to keep our prices as low as possible. We may not always not be the cheapest as we always use the highest quality materials. This ensures you receive lasting installations at a great standard.

*To increase the performance and longevity of your surfacing we would advise the installation of a formal sub base.

Bonded Rubber Mulch Price

The bonded rubber mulch price is £55 per metre.

As a professional company in the UK, we aim to offer the best rubber mulch prices around. Our team will offer top quality products at reasonable prices and we shall not be beaten for a like for like quote. Although there may be cheaper contractors out there, they might not have the same experience as we do. They also may not make use of the same quality materials.

The design of the product gives longer lasting strength and durability. This means that the mulch prices are more cost-effective. For areas that are used by young kids, the surface supplies a durable and resilient option.

The soft spongy components allow for greater comfort and safety when running and playing across the surfacing. It’s ideal for nursery play facilities to protect the children. The flooring is perfect as an impact absorbent type surrounding recreational equipment. What’s more, it creates a good looking and decorative option for public parks and walkways.
