00:02 Hi, guys. It’s Tom from Soft Surfaces here. And on today’s video we’re going to be showing you a daily mile installation at Appleton Thorn Primary, Warrington. The first thing we did for this job is actually dig out the base of the track itself. So this was actually in a very large field. You can see from these photos here, we’re digging out our base ready to actually install the track into that area. So this is a very large area, which means obviously you have to use this machinery here as you can see, digging up the base. Ready for us then to actually begin the installation process itself. So these are a very popular surface type for schools, obviously because it keeps the kids fit, and it gives them a lot of exercise throughout their recreational and educational use really. So next up we then lay down the membrane, which you can see us actually doing here on this photo. And then after that, we begin to create the stone sub-base. This is essentially the layer that goes on prior to the rubber mulch being installed to the surface. And this essentially works as a protective layer to ensure that weed do not grow through the surface. Obviously improving the longevity of the surface generally as well. So you can see that actually being applied now, and the process is starting to come together very nicely. You see from this next shot here in a minute that we actually start to use drone footage to actually show the entire track, as you can see there. We use it basically to kind of show the scale of the track that we’re installing here, and obviously the stone base is laid at this particular moment of the job. So next up our team are actually raking up the a stone base, obviously getting it ready for the rubber mulch to be installed. And now far as applying the rubber mulch itself. So we obviously pour that on there with the mixer. And it’s obviously ready, and we obviously then screed that onto these stones sub-base and let the kind of glue settle and dry in the sun, ready for it to kind of just settle in. And basically the surface is then completely installed. So you can see, it is a very large job for us. We got some more drone footage here of us actually screening that off, flying it down making sure it’s all properly installed. And now finally for the completed project. So you can see again using our drone here, we’re going to take that up to the sky and show you the scale of the job. There it is installed. A really, really big job for is this one. And they were very, very pleased with the outcome. Obviously it does like I said, give the kids the ability to be using this for educational and recreational use. And just generally a great facility to have during playtime or lunchtime, or whatever it may be. 00:06 Hi guys, it’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here and today we’re going to be showing you a rubber mulch installation at the Bull & Dog Inn, Burscough, Ormskirk area.

00:14 So the first thing we do here is actually install the Geotextile Membrane, which is placed onto the surface. So as you can see this is a necessary part which we then install the rubber mulch on top of.

00:24 After the membrane is placed, the rubber mulch is then prepared, so you can see on this video here we’re preparing that mulch then to be installed.

00:32 After this, the rubber mulch is actually applied to the surface. So these photos you can see it being installed there. It’s a very nice natural finish, but obviously gives the kids the safety that they need.

00:38 And here’s the completed project now. So it’s a great little playground surface this for this Inn, as obviously it gives the kids ability to play whilst the family are going out for a meal or drink or whatever they’re doing, and obviously keeps the kids safe being rubber mulch, and being that rubber soft surface.

When it comes to playing area surfacing, there are so many different types of materials that you can choose from, ranging from wet pour to artificial grass. However, one type of surfacing that seems to be quite popular for playgrounds is rubber mulch.

The material is incredibly versatile and once you know the benefits this material offers; rubber play bark becomes a lot more appealing and suitable for a wide range of applications.

What is Rubber Mulch?

Rubber Mulch is a type of surface that can be installed mainly on playgrounds that are made up entirely of shredded rubber. As well as this, the rubber bark particles are bonded together with a special resin so there is no rotting, movement or loss of particles.

In addition, bonded mulch is a porous material meaning that it can dry out quickly in case it starts to rain, or water makes contact. This keeps the surface clean and dry and allows kids to carry on playing.

Another thing about this surface is that it comes bonded together to form a tightly packed material. This is different from other loose chipping surfaces as it means material won’t get lost from the area leading to the need for a top-up.

Okay, so we all know that Health & Safety has become a little…overzealous over the last few years. If they want to put a poster up using pins, teachers have to wear safety goggles. (I’m not kidding, by the way). We’ve all sat and listened to Grandad rant about how ridiculous all the regulations are while he regales us with stories of ‘how he used to play in the rubble of bombed-out houses after the Second World War and no harm ever came to him,’ but times are different now.

When it comes to your little one’s safety in the playground, then you can understand the need for strict guidelines. We sometimes forget that children’s bodies are still growing and a broken arm at this early stage of life could result in the bone healing unnaturally causing complications later in life.

The Project

Take our recent project at a primary school in Brighton as an example. The play area was much like any other school’s; a climbing net and three climbing walls but no safety flooring. While the equipment itself was in good condition, the flooring was severely lacking in redeeming features.

Dirt, weeds, pebbles, stones, and, most worrying of all, large blocks of concrete where the foundations for the equipment had been poured. Now that’s all fine and dandy if you’re on an SAS assault course, but this is in a school playground. If Little Billy decides one day that he’s Spider-man and he tests his super jumping abilities from the top of the climbing wall onto this surface, you’re going to have a problem. And possibly a solicitor’s letter.

Restoration

The team at Soft Surfaces replaced the nightmare-inducing flooring with a far safer rubber mulch. The mulch is made from old shredded truck tyres bonded together in a flexible resin that resembles traditional wooden bark chips. The beauty of the rubber mulch is that your child doesn’t come home with half a forest stuck to their socks and because the mulch is made from recycled tyres, it’s good for the environment (and Little Billy’s back) too. It also won’t attract insects or blow away like Dorothy and Toto at the first sign of a stiff breeze as traditional mulch is prone to doing.

The rubber-bonded mulch shred was laid inside a pre-existing bordered space which provided a superb, neat finish, but the massive advantage the mulch has is that it’s also able to be laid directly straight on to grassy surfaces and it will stay put. It can be laid directly on top of mud, tarmac, even unsightly flooded areas, and because the mulch is permeable, that area won’t flood again. No expensive groundwork to pay out for, flooding solved AND it looks better? Win/Win.

Yet another advantage of the versatility of this material is that it meant that the existing equipment could stay where it was and we could work around it. So, no breaking ground to remove the climbing walls and nets, no smashing up of foundations and no pouring fresh ones which would keep the area off-limits until it had dried and set.

The climbing equipment simply stayed in situ and the rubber mulch was installed around it. This helped us to keep costs down for the school and the inconvenience of the equipment being out of action was kept to a minimum.

The Finished Result

Once the mulch had set, the school had a surface that was colourful, weather-resistant, durable and, most importantly, safe for the children. The surface should require only minimal future maintenance and feedback from the school praised our high standard of work and how we had taken the time to actually explain the process to them rather than just get on with the job.

So for this job the client got in touch with us looking for a new surface to surround their park bench, and wanted something that looked natural without the typical maintenance needed. We explained the rubber mulch we could offer, and very shortly after got to work installing.

So rubber mulch is a surface type consisting of recycled rubber chippings, coloured and blended together to create a natural-looking surface.

Rubber mulch has many benefits, the first of which being the fact that despite giving off this natural appearance, rubber mulch is largely maintenance-free.
