Soft Surfaces Ltd was approached two years ago with regards to a multi use games area that was constructed in macadam, as the school did not think this was the correct sports surface for their sporting needs which included football, tennis, netball and a general multitude of sports. However they also said that they used this area as their main playground so it was going to be heavily use and therefore we specified and designed within our quotation the MultiSport Synthetic Surfacing which is supplied by Playrite who are based in West Yorkshire and a specialist in manufacturing artificial sports surfaces.

00:05 A multi-use games area, otherwise known as a MUGA, is a multipurpose facility designed to incorporate sports such as tennis, netball, basketball, football, and many other sports all into one actual surface itself. It enables people to essentially play all of those sports at different times, or at the same time on one actual facility.

And these different surface types categorize into different types of MUGAs, so there’s a type one, a type two, etc, and we can really explain that in more detail in a whole other video.

Here are some of the MUGA surface finishes that are possible:

• Tarmacadam- is a hard tarmac surface ideal for basketball/netball, football (5 a-side), tennis or hockey where a ball has to be able to bounce or role on a flat surface.
• 2G – Is a compacted plastic pile filled with just sand. It provides a smooth flat surface for sports like hockey and football.
• 3G – This is an hardwearing artificial grass that can have sand and rubber infill. These pitches are more useful for football and rugby. They can have shock absorbing properties to slide, fall and tackle on.
• Polymeric – Is a 10mm layer of rubber granules with an EPDM structural spray coat to provide anti-slip capabilities. This is laid over tarmac to give a hard rubber surface which is great for tennis, basketball and netball.

Each surface has different capabilities to provide a different finish for each designated sport or game.

00:05 Hi Guys. It’s Dan from Soft Surfaces again here. And on this video we’re going to be showing you a polymeric surface refurbishment in Kennington, London. The first thing we do here is actually examine the existing surface. So you can see here it’s got the very large cracks in it, it’s very worn down. Really is a need of a refurbishment. It kind of, you know, makes the area look a lot more drab than it needs to. So what we did is we actually get the new polymeric surface and we take it there. So we’re obviously fitting that there, as you can see from the photos. You can see the difference in contrast between the old service and the new.

00:31 And after that’s actually on the structural polymeric spray’s then actually fitted on. So this is actually for Adidas, as you can see from the logo. And here you can see it really transforms the area, make it look a lot brighter, a lot more colourful, a lot more inviting really.

00:43 So Soft Surfaces actually works with polymeric surfaces for a long time. We install them and refurbish them across the country and we have a lot of different jobs in London that we have examples of as well to show you. So the great thing with polymeric is it’s available in different colours, different sizes, and obviously you know, it can be used for different surface types too so basketball, football, etc.

01:00 So here is the completed project now guys. So you know, this looks absolutely brilliant when it’s installed. You can see the contrast from when it was first, from what it first looked like with the cracks. And you know, obviously the worn down finish. It’s got brand new surface now ready to play multiple sports on as it’s a multi-use games area. And obviously the line marking really adds it, brings it all together as well, makes them look absolutely fantastic.
