Type 2 MUGA Open Textured Porous Macadam Polyurethane Painting Finish

Type 2 MUGA is determined by the finished playing surface. This type of MUGA is made from an Open Textured Porous Macadam finish which is made from a sub base and 2 Macadam layers. The finished playing performance is measured from BS7044-4. This type of Multi Use Games Area has Netball, Athletics, Basketball, Tennis and Football played on the surface and the sub base is constructed with 200mm thickness of MOT Type 1 Stone. It then has a 50mm Open Textured 20mm Aggregate binder course installed over the top, this is known as the Macadam Binder Course. Afterwards, it has a 25mm Open Textured 6mm Aggregate wearing course installed. This is known as the Wearing course. This is a standard Sport England specification for a Type 2 MUGA and is tested to BS7044-4.

The MUGA is then coated with a Polyurethane Anti Slip Coating. This coating contains a silica and additional aluminium oxide as this can achieve an anti slip rating of 75TRRL for Netball. The anti slip coating comes in 5 standard colours which are White, Red, Green, Yellow and Blue and once these have been applied, it will achieve a Health & Safety accreditation from CHAS, CONSTRUCTION LINE and API. MUGAs are designed to have game line markings applied and these are done by using a Fully Textured Water Based Polyurethane Line Mark Paint. The primary sport is normally done in White and with specified 50mm wide lines. These details are normally specified in the Q22 of a project.

The Difference Between Macadam and Polymeric Rubber

When it comes to sports courts, two of the most common surfaces are macadam and polymeric rubber. These specifications may appear quite similar to look at, but they both have unique characteristics that make them different.

Depending on the sports you want to play and the skill level, one of these surfaces may suit your facility better. Below are some of the key features of each specification and the differences between.

What is Macadam Sport Surfacing?

Macadam Sport Surfacing is a popular type of surfacing used by schools, sports clubs, playgrounds and domestic homes due to its wide range of applications. Ranging from pathways to driveways, the surfacing can be used in different situations. However, it’s usually most popular to create outdoor sports areas. See more about tarmacadam surfacing here if you are interested in this product.

Macadam is a material made up of stone mixed with tar. The process usually needs a stone sub-base to be poured on top of the desired surface. Once the stone sub-base has been poured and spread evenly, then the macadam mixture can be poured on top of it. Once set, it’ll need 3 weeks for the oils to vaporise. After that, colours and designs can start being applied.

Advantages of Tarmac Flooring

  • Cost effective – Macadam is quite cheap and hardly requires any more money to be spent on it.
  • Requires low maintenance – Means you can spend less time worrying about maintaining the surface and more time enjoying it.
  • Porous – Water that falls onto the tarmac will start to be drained, avoiding any chance of flooding.
  • Fully customisable – When creating the surface, you can choose the colour, designs and lining you wish to have.
  • Good ball bounce – Games like football, basketball and netball will be a lot better due to the floor adding a bit more bounce to the ball.
  • Slip resistance – A coating of paint can be applied to the surfacing which increases the slip resistance, making it great for children.

Disadvantages of Macadam

  • Time-consuming – It can take up to 3 weeks for the surface to be ready for customisation so it’s usually good to book in advance.
  • Additions can cost more – When adding things like slip-resistant paint, designs and colours, it can cost you more money and set you back financially.

What is Polymeric Rubber Flooring?

Polymeric Rubber is basically granules of rubber held together by polyurethane (a binding agent) and sprayed with a high-traction, coloured top-coat. It’s most commonly used for surfacing athletic running tracks but is also popular for tennis, netball and basketball courts and multi-use games areas.

When the polymeric rubber is placed on the surface, it is then sprayed with a high-traction top-coat which is the actual playing surface. If lines are wanted as well, they can be sprayed on top of this layer. A shockpad can also be installed underneath the polymeric rubber layer for shock absorption, to avoid any injuries if someone falls over. Learn more about polymeric surfacing here if you’re interested in this particular specification.

Advantages of EPDM Rubber Surfaces

  • Range of colours – Can be customised to match your preferences and needs.
  • Best for professional athletics and a higher standard of play – Due to the surface is a lot more tailored for athletics, it makes the best surface for it.
  • Porous – Again, this surface can drain water that starts to form on the EPDM.
  • Shockpad – Incredibly useful to install as it reduces the risk of injury when someone falls over on the surface.

Disadvantages of Polymeric Surfacing

  • Needs to be laid on a tarmac surface – This can eliminate many plans you may have to install one of these or it can cost a lot more.
  • Can be expensive – With all the additional add-ons, the surfacing can become a lot more expensive compared to other alternatives.

PS15 Activity Surfacing Upgrade London

Earlier this year we completed a project which transformed a school’s outdoor play area into a fantastic new games space with PS15 activity surfacing. As part of Sport Engand’s Primary Spaces programme, many UK primary schools were given the opportunity to receive funding for improvements to their outdoor spaces. We carried out this work at a school in London where the existing macadam playground was worn out and could not offer the kids a good quality outdoor games area. The Primary Spaces funding was used to upgrade this facility with a new better quality surface which creates a multipurpose space for children to enjoy. Keep reading to see the full transformation in all its glory from start to finish.

Upgrading Existing Macadam Surface

At this London school, the sports and games area was surfaced in hard macadam which had become worn out and lost a lot of its playing qualities over time. Although this tarmac flooring was no longer suitable as a playground, we used it as the sub base for installing the new PS15 activity surfacing. The chosen specification for this project was a Multisport synthetic turf carpet which is a popular choice for many school games facilities. We use this specialist turf carpet as it’s extremely versatile and can be used for a lot of different activities and sports. It also offers protection against injury for children when running and playing on the surface. To find out more about this durable surface type, contact us today by filling in our contact form and we’ll send you a product sheet with a further description and price to install.

The installation process for this artificial turf carpet consisted of rolling the surface out onto the existing tarmac. To create the PS15 design, different sized pieces of Multisport turf were installed in yellow, blue and green, then secured with glue at the seams and the edges. Inlaid line markings were then added in red to complete the multi coloured effect. Finally the whole surface was infilled with sand which adds performance quality and helps to keep the grass fibres stable and upright. Our professional installers ensured that this infill was evenly spread throughout the games area to ensure consistent and even playing qualities.

PS15 Activity Surfacing Design

In order to create a multi purpose games space which could be used in PE lessons, break times and extracurricular clubs, the PS15 design incorporates coloured spaces. By using the blue and green squares of carpet, the flooring is split up into smaller sections which can each be used for different activities at the same time. This allows small groups of children to take part in a game they enjoy while also getting to try lots of other sports through a circuit system. Of course, the whole area can also be used as one for a full-sized game which involves everybody playing together. This concept is similar to multi use games areas which are used for sports like netball, tennis and football, take a look here for a further explanation of the MUGA court designs.

Once all of the specialist installation work was complete, the final result was a fantastic new games space which children at this London school can use for loads of different things. The Multisport synthetic turf is very hard wearing and offers a uniquely diverse specification which makes it ideal for multi purpose use. Have a look a the video below to see the whole project from start to finish which includes the complete PS15 activity surfacing upgrade with the final result:

What Is Tarmacadam?

With many different surfaces available in the sport and play industry, Soft Surfaces are often asked about tarmacadam and the areas where it can be installed.

Tarmac Surfacing Explained

Please see a short video below which explains tarmac surfacing in a bit more detail.

Please see transcript below:

00:00 Hi guys, it’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here and today we’re going to be explaining what are tarmacadam surfaces. Tarmacadam surfaces are essentially surfaces that could by used in many different locations, including sports courts, driveways and play areas, and for more information about the play areas and the tarmacadam surfaces that we install in them, just check out our nursery playgrounds work video here.

00:18 These tarmacadam surfaces are incredibly cost effective, low maintenance, and they’re also permeable, which means that water can drain through them very easily. In addition to this they’re incredible versatile and customisable too and consume any need of the client that they wish.

00:32 Here at Soft Surfaces Limited we are proud to say that we’re an experienced installer of tarmacadam surfaces and have been for over 20 years straight. So if you’d like any more information about these surface types, or you’d like to inquire please just visit us as

Soft Tarmac Suppliers, Contractors, Installers

Soft Tarmac Suppliers, Contractors, Installers can only be done when the weather is dry and cannot be done in wet condition because the rubber epdm granules mixed with the PU binder reacts when it is wet as the polyurethane foams. The soft tarmac surface is a moisture curing system and therefore this is the reason it has to be done when the weather is right.

The depth of the safety surface is dependent on the sub base it is installed onto and also with the CFH of the playground equipment. A standard depth is a 40mm system which achieves a CFH of 1.35m onto an MOT type 1 stone sub base but please ask should there be multi units on the play areas or playgrounds because we will need the platform height from the playground suppliers.

There are several soft tarmac suppliers and contractors in the UK but I would always recommend checking they are a member of the API and also CHAS accredited. Furthermore it is always clever to check the year they was established because new companies come and go and means your play area surfaces might be left with repairs under no guarantee.

The soft tarmac installers is made up of SBR rubber crumb base and EPDM wearing course rubber crumb material that can be installed in a selection of various colours and can have several wetpour graphics inserts within the soft play surface area. The wetpour system is known to have many names including spongy surfaces, bouncy macadam, soft surfacing and many more. For more information on this surface please contact us on 01625 445760 or visit our website on

Tarmacadam Flooring Maintenance

Tarmac surfaces are a popular choice for organisations like schools and sport clubs within the UK. Hard court surfaces provide excellent ball bounce and slip resistance qualities for facilities such as MUGAs. You can play range of sports in these areas including netball, tennis and basketball. If you want to keep your tarmac surface in great condition, then you should carry out regular tarmacadam flooring maintenance and be proactive with the cleaning schedule.

Macadam Surface Cleaning

In order to keep your tarmacadam surfacing in good condition, you will need to conduct regular maintenance. We highly recommend you carry out professional macadam surface cleaning at least once a year. By cleaning the court regularly you can take off any dirt and debris which could be blocking the pores in the surface and affecting the porous properties of the area. It’s also important to clean the surfacing regularly, so that the surface does not become slippery. If you do not complete routine cleaning, the surfacing could become slippery and be dangerous for users.

Along with pressure washing the area, we would also recommend applying a chemical treatment to prevent the growth of moss and algae. You should really apply a moss and algae treatment once a year to remove contamination and prevent it growing back. If you need more information regarding the chemical treatment we can apply, please contact us now using the enquiry form.

There are two types of maintenance needed to be carried out, these are proactive and reactive. Proactive maintenance is done to prevent pitch issues and reactive maintenance is done when your surfacing needs to be repaired after it has been damaged.

If you don’t have a macadam maintenance plan set out then it can cause further problems, such as more damage, sports pitch drainage issues and loss of slip resistance. This is why it is necessary to be proactive with tarmacadam flooring maintenance; this should include brushing, pressure washing and also applying chemical treatments which will prevent contamination on the surface. If the floor has dirt, leaves or litter on it, then you should remove these as quickly as possible. This is because the dirt from the debris can leave contamination upon the flooring which can block the drainage system.

Please fill in our contact form if you’d like some more information about the maintenance of tarmac surfaces. We’ll send you over some product sheets and prices as soon as possible.

Maintaining Tarmac Surfaces

More thorough macadam surface cleaning could include repairs, repainting or relining. These should all be carried out by specialists to ensure that it is done correctly. Within time tarmac surfaces can become old, tired and worn out if they do not have an appropriate cleaning plan and have a lot of heavy use. The sports surface could need to have a water based court binder applied and also aggregate acrylic spray coating application onto the flooring. This process will improve the appearance visually and also restore high playing qualities which will make it a better sports surface and facility.

Maintaining tarmac surfaces is vital to ensure you extend the life of the surfacing. By carried out maintenance you will be able to get the most out of your money and best value. If you’ve got any questions regarding the maintenance we can carry out or what you can be doing to maintain your surface, please complete the enquiry form and we will respond.

Asphalt Surface Repair

Over time macadam surfaces may become cracked due to excessive use and general wear and tear. It’s important to fix these cracks as soon as possible in order to prevent any accidents or injuries to users. Our team often complete asphalt surface repair for sports surfaces. This includes filling in the cracks using 2mm emerald stone mixed with a polyurethane binder.

Once the cracks have been filled we recommend coating the entire surfacing with a polyurethane binder. This will help to strengthen the entire area and prevent fretting. The PU binder will also act as a glue which will help to make paint stick better if you’re painting the surface afterwards.

If the surfacing has too much damage for minor repairs, we can offer a full resurface. This can consist of laying a new tarmac wearing course over the existing area to create a brand new outdoor sports facility to play on. This can cancel out any cracks in the surfacing and can help to level the area.

Should you have any questions regarding asphalt surface repair and resurfacing, please contact us using the contact form provided.

Water Based Court Binder

The water based court binder can repair damages, such as fretting or cracks upon the surface. When it is applied it can also enhance the durability of the pitch. Specialist court binder should only be applied when macadam surface cleaning is complete. You should always ensure there is no dirt or contamination on the surfacing before applying it. This is because the dirt can stop the court binder from sticking, which would make it pointless for you to do. When installing sports pitch paint coatings onto macadam surfaces, it’s necessary to discuss the design of the facility before the process begins.

There are a range of colours that we offer, these include red, blue, green and purple. If you prefer, we can even apply multiple colours to the area. Some surfaces which we undertake maintenance on just need a re-application of line marking. We’ll then spray line-markings onto the surfacing in a colour of your choice. This is a quick and simple process but it’s necessary for a high-quality facility.

If you’ve got a macadam surfacing which is in need of maintenance or repairs, please get in touch with us so we may help. Our experienced team will be able to offer advice regarding the best type of tarmacadam flooring maintenance. We’ll also be happy to put together a quote that will suit your budget. If you fill in our contact box we will get back to you as soon as possible. Our team can provide more information on these services.
