Size of 5 a Side Court MUGA

5 a Side MUGA sports courts have a minimum playing size of 25.91m x 16.76m. The dimensions you choose will depend on the design you want for your facility. Many schools and clubs have these pitches for playing football, both as practise and for matches. Having the smaller recreational size can help to cut costs compared to installing full sized areas.

Alternatively, many organisations choose to install multi use games areas which accommodate multiple sports. If you choose this, then the dimensions could alter to suit other activities. The maximum 5 a side pitch size is 25.91 x 42.62m. The larger playing surface will mean the construction cost will be higher. We try to make our quotes cost effective, but it all depends on the customer’s budget.

You can speak to our team today and get a price for installing one of these facilities. The dimensions and sizes will vary depending on what you need and this can also affect costs. Just fill in our contact form and let us know what you’re looking for so we can offer more advice. You can also find out more about all weather pitch floodlights along with other accessories we offer.

5 a Side Pitch Designs

The MUGA surfaces come in a few different options. See below to find out more about each product:

  • 2G Synthetic Turf Carpet – Suitable for playing football and hockey, popular at schools.
  • 3G Artificial Grass – Ideal for football and rugby, contains rubber infill for natural playing qualities.
  • Polymeric Rubber Surface – Play football, tennis, netball and basketball, good ball bounce and slip resistance.
  • Macadam Sports Court – Multi use qualities for tennis, netball, football and basketball, perfect for schools.

The 5 a side pitch designs completely depend on how you would like to use the area. Lots of schools and clubs choose to have multi sports markings so they can make the most out of the facility. The game line marking or sports lines for 5 A side football are normally white with a 50mm width. We also offer different colours to mark out individual sporting activities. Sport lines can normally be touched up or replaced during the life of the sports surfacing.

Dimensions of a 5-a-Side Facility

When it comes to designing these areas, the dimensions of a 5-a-side facility can be tailored to suit each project. Since these pitches are generally used for recreational purposes, there are no strict guidelines to follow. It’s completely up to you and your budget, and we can offer a design and quote to suit you. Take a look at this 5 a Side MUGA Construction in Gloucester to see one of our projects from start to finish.

You can also have a look at the video below to see how the work was done by our team:

The 5-a-side football pitches are usually best to be played on 3G synthetic turf surfaces because these give the best playing characteristics. The synthetic 3G sports surfacing is an artificial grass carpet infilled with sand and rubber infill. There is sometimes a need for a shockpad beneath this third generation sports grass dependent on the accreditation they are looking to achieve.

Type 3 Polymeric Surfacing MUGA

Type 3 polymeric surfacing MUGA facilities are rubber surface specifications which are ideal for a variety of sports with the main sport as netball. Other activities played on the multi use games area will be football, tennis, basketball, athletics and 5-a-side football.

Polymeric Surfacing Specification

The Type 3 polymeric material is commonly installed in schools and is designed to have a high slip resistance rating for netball. The polymeric system is made up of EPDM rubber crumb granules which are mixed together with a binder and then laid onto a macadam base. An anti slip paint coating is then applied to give the stable playing characteristics and the rubber EPDM surface gives the sport surface a cushioned underfoot feel. Line markings can also be applied to the flooring contrasting coloured non slip paint to distinguish between the different sports which the facility will be used for.

Once the polymeric surfacing has been installed, there is the option to have a range of extra accessories and equipment included with the full construction project. These could be fencing in a variety of heights from 3m-5m, sports floodlighting, and maintenance equipment to help you keep your surface sport court in top condition. Having these extra accessories can help you make the most out of your new sport facility by giving you the opportunity to rent it out to other clubs and teams for training sessions and competitive matches in the evening.

Polymeric Sports Surface

This surface is composed of a rubberized crumb and mixed with a binding agent. The rubber utilised is wonderful for sports a result of the bounce and grip attributes the surfacing possesses. Netball, tennis, long jump runways and high jump zones traditionally have this type of flooring. Polymeric rubber surfaces are permeable, so this means they can be utilized year-round. Polymeric wet pour is available in a selection of colours.

You ought to thoroughly clean your sport surface frequently to maintain it in great condition. Sweeping is very good to get rid of any sort of contamination. If perhaps your sports pitch will need more specialist maintenance then our pro companies can come to site.

We can carry out the installation of EPDM sport surfacing for a number of schools, colleges and sport clubs across the United Kingdom. If you’d like to see one of our installations, please see the video below:

As experienced sport surfacing contractors, we have installed many of these MUGA courts all over the UK at schools, colleges and clubs. MUGA Anti Slip Sports Coatings

MUGA Anti Slip Sports Coatings are installed on all types of sports courts throughout the UK. A multi use sports facility is generally coated to meet the slip resistance for the sports played on the sports surfaces and the main types on anti slip paint used are acrylic paint which is mainly installed onto type 1 and type 2 MUGAs which are tarmac / macadam surfacing. The acrylic coating meets slip resistance for tennis, netball, basketball and football.

Polyurethane Court Paint

Another popular anti slip paint used is a polyurethane paint which is generally installed onto type 3 and type 4 sports courts which are generally polymeric surfaces. Polymeric surfaces are rubber EPDM crumb that is installed insitu on site. The rubber crumb is mixed with a polyurethane binder and poured in place to cure.

The rubber surface takes approx 24 hours to cure and is a moisture cure system. The polyurethane is then painted and coated onto the sports surface to give the slip resistance suitable for sports courts where basketball, netball, football, athletics, tennis and lacrosse is played.

MUGA Line Markings

Multi use games area sports coating gives the sports courts a great look, as well as the playing performance needed and the sports surfaces, are line marked. Netball line marking is installed in yellow mostly, football line marking is generally in white and basketball sports lines mainly in red however this is changed from site to site because of the coloured background.

In the video below you can see our team repainting the line markings onto a tarmac MUGA in Derby:

For further details on MUGA sport surface coatings please visit the link sports coatings or ring our office on fill in our contact form with your information. The office will assist you with all enquiries but you can also find out more on this websites. Find plenty of information including case studies of previous projects and product sheets to help you with specifications, designs and layouts of the sports pitches.

Maintaining Anti Slip Coatings

The non slip painting system in the UK will need a respray every few years. This will help it stay in top condition and maintain the slip resistant qualities. Whether it is a tennis court, netball playing surface, football kickabout area or multisport surfacing dual use recreational area, you should test it regularly. You should do this to make sure it meets the slip resistance and skid resistance by the governing bodies specifications.

Feel free to get in touch with us today if you’d like to find out more about what we do. One of our team would be happy to give you a quote for any anti slip sports coatings you need.

What is a Netball Court?

A netball court is a designated playing area specifically designed for the sport of netball, providing a regulated space for players to engage in matches following set dimensions and specifications.

The purpose of a netball court extends beyond just being a playing area; it serves as a crucial platform where players showcase their skills, strategies, and teamwork. The layout of the court, with distinct zones like the shooting circle and centre third, plays a vital role in ensuring fair gameplay and strategic movements.

Netball court dimensions are standardised to promote consistency across matches, with specific measurements for line markings, goalposts, and centre circle radius.

The surfacing materials are carefully chosen for durability, traction, and player safety, with options ranging from acrylic surfaces to rubberised courts. The court’s well-defined boundaries enhance player engagement, encouraging quick decision-making, agile movements, and effective communication among team members.

Standard Size of a Netball Court

The standard size of a netball court is 30.5m x 15.25m.

The World Netball Rules outline these specific dimensions, ensuring a consistent and fair playing field for all participants.

Player positioning becomes crucial in this game to maximise scoring opportunities and defensive strategies. Specific zones are dedicated to each player’s role and movements.

Adherence to these standardised court measurements not only promotes consistency in gameplay but also ensures the safety of the players by allowing ample room for quick passes and agile footwork.

The dimensions of a netball court encompass the length, width, run-off zones, and specific areas that define the playing enclosure, ensuring a standardised layout for competitive gameplay.

Standard netball courts are meticulously designed to adhere to specific measurements set by governing bodies, such as the International Netball Federation.

The run-off zones have a minimum width of 3 metres, providing ample space for players to manoeuvre along the sidelines without obstruction.

The shooting circles at each end of the court are essential components where attackers aim to score goals, further enhancing the strategic elements of netball gameplay.

What is the Recommended Surface for a Netball Court?

The recommended surface for a netball court often includes polymeric or macadam surfaces.

These surfaces provide the necessary durability, traction, and visibility for players, complemented by clear line markings for accurate gameplay.

Regarding choosing between polymeric and macadam surfaces for netball courts, it’s crucial to consider the specific needs of the players and the long-term maintenance requirements.

Polymeric surfaces offer excellent shock absorption, reducing the risk of injuries during gameplay. On the other hand, macadam surfaces are known for their smooth texture and consistent ball bounce, enhancing player performance. Both options require regular upkeep, such as line repainting and surface cleaning, to ensure optimal playing conditions.

What are the Markings on a Netball Court?

The markings on a netball court mark the field of play, including key boundary lines, centre circle, goal circles, and other essential indicators that define the court dimensions and playing areas.

In a standard netball court, the sideline markings signify the boundaries within which the game is played.

Each end of the court features goal lines that mark the scoring zones and determine successful goal attempts.

The centre circle serves as a pivotal area for the initial pass-offs and restricts early player movements at the start of each quarter.

The shooting circle, surrounded by the semicircular goal circle, designates the area where only specific player roles can score, adding strategic depth to the game.

Netball courts have sports lines that are 50mm wide and are completed using a specialist sports line acrylic coating. Similar sports surfaces that can be played on these surfaces include lacrosse, Football, tennis and Basketball.

What is a MUGA?

A MUGA, or multi use games area, is a space used for multiple sports and play activities.

Utilising a MUGA maximises space efficiency, providing multiple sports options in one designated area.

Users, whether children, teens, or adults, can enjoy organised matches or casual games due to the inclusive nature of these facilities.

Benefits of a MUGA for Schools, Sports Clubs, and Leisure Centres

A MUGA offers numerous benefits for schools, sports clubs, and leisure centres, including its versatility, cost-effectiveness, space-saving design, and low maintenance requirements, making it an ideal solution for diverse recreational needs.

Versatility

The versatility of a MUGA lies in its ability to accommodate multiple sports and recreational activities within a single court facility, offering diverse playing opportunities for users of all ages and interests.

These multi-sport facilities can transform from a basketball court to a tennis court, a football pitch, or even a space for informal games like hopscotch, providing a dynamic platform for individuals to engage in a wide range of physical activities.

Such adaptability fosters inclusivity, where people can come together to play their favourite sports or try out new ones, enhancing community integration and healthy competition while promoting an active lifestyle.

Cost-Effective

The cost-effective nature of a MUGA stems from its efficient installation process, competitive pricing models, and the ability to request quotes tailored to specific sports hall requirements, ensuring affordability without compromising quality.

When considering the pricing considerations of MUGA installations, it’s important to note that the cost savings go beyond the initial investment.

The competitive pricing models offered by various providers make MUGAs an attractive option for sports facility projects.

The ability to request quotes tailored to specific requirements allows for flexibility in budgeting, ensuring that the project aligns with financial constraints.

Space-Saving

The space-saving design of a MUGA optimises land usage by incorporating efficient run-offs and court surrounds, maximising the available playing area while ensuring player safety and comfort within a compact footprint.

MUGAs make efficient use of space by strategically placing run-off zones that minimise wasted areas and provide safe boundaries for various sports activities.

The clever layout considerations of MUGAs play a crucial role in optimising space, allowing multiple courts to coexist harmoniously within a single enclosure.

The court surrounds of MUGAs are designed to be functional yet space-efficient, ensuring that the playing area is fully utilised without unnecessary gaps or unused space. This meticulous attention to detail in the layout enhances the overall playing experience while making the most out of limited space.

Low Maintenance

The low maintenance requirements of a MUGA are attributed to its durable surfacing, minimalistic design elements, and efficient lighting systems, reducing the need for intensive upkeep and ensuring sustained performance over time.

One of the key advantages of MUGAs is the use of durable surfacing materials that are specifically designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and harsh weather conditions, requiring minimal repair and replacement.

The lighting solutions implemented in MUGAs not only enhance visibility during evening hours but also contribute to improved safety and security, further reducing the chances of damage or accidents that may require maintenance.

Careful consideration of gradients in the design of MUGAs promotes efficient drainage, preventing water buildup that can deteriorate the surface and necessitate costly repairs.

In terms of technical standards, the length and width of the court are determined by the International Netball Federation (INF), with specific dimensions recommended to maintain fair gameplay and uphold the integrity of the sport.

What Other Sports Can Be Played on a MUGA?

A MUGA can accommodate various sports, such as basketball, tennis, and other recreational activities, in addition to netball.

Thus, it provides a versatile platform for diverse sports enthusiasts to engage in different games within the same facility.

These Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their flexibility in hosting multiple sports on a single court.

Imagine a group of friends switching between a competitive basketball match to a friendly game of tennis without needing to move to different locations.

The beauty of MUGAs lies in their adaptability to cater to various skill levels and interests, making them ideal for communities looking to promote inclusivity and physical activity.

Pressure Cleaning Tennis Courts MUGA Surfaces

Pressure cleaning of the tennis sports court is now a vital part of Multi Use Games Area maintenance and could help prolong the life of the All Weather Pitch. The affected MUGAs may have become slippery or have moss on the playing surface. This could cause injury to the players or lead to it collecting water.

Our team can offer a range of specialist services including pressure washing of these facilities. It is much better to keep on top of the maintenance rather than having to make repairs. This will help reduce costs and create less hassle for you. You can also maintain the court yourself by regularly brushing the area to remove dirt and leaves.

Jet Washing Tennis Courts

The cleaning process of the sports surface starts with a rotary high pressure clean. This will be cleaning the tennis court whilst not damaging the top playing surface. The area will then be treated with a fungicidal wash and algae killer. The multi use games areas will then be safer due to the dirt and grime being washed away. It reduces the risk of slips and trips on the facility as well as making it look a lot better.

The sports pitch surfacing will now be ready for the replacement of the game line marking. We can apply a fresh coating of macadam anti slip paint to add colour and improve the playing qualities. Most multi use games areas have multi sports lines installed like football, netball, basketball and tennis.

This upgrade is an essential part of the process as it will restore the Tennis Court slip resistance and it will be a significant cosmetic improvement. The re-colouring of the MUGA surface cusing an acrylic coating, polyurethane finish or other sports line marking products.

Costs of Tennis Court Cleaning

The price of the procedure is dependent on the size of the MUGA and specifications. Soft Surfaces are a contractor who can provide information regarding this cleaning process or colour coating. A larger area will of course take more time to clean and require more materials. The same goes for a very dirty and contaminated area compared to one with small amounts of moss. It will take more time and be more expensive to clean the very dirty surface. We offer various types of macadam surfacing maintenance to suit individual facilities.

Take a look at this video below to see our team cleaning and repainting an existing tarmac court. As you can see the area was covered in a lot of moss and overgrown weeds. We carried out a full jet wash of the area and applied new paint and line markings. This gave the area a completely new look and left it almost unrecognisable:

Our team can discuss this work with you and offer a quote for carrying out the tennis court pressure wash. Just get in touch with us today and tell us what you need. If you give us an idea of your budget as well that would help us make it cost effective for you.

Astro Turf MUGA Sports Pitches Rejuvenation Maintenance

Astroturf MUGA synthetic all-weather turf and 3G / 4G artificial grass are all-purpose surfaces that are very common in the UK and these can be built, designed and specified to be almost any area dimension and specification. When these pitches become tired and start to get flooded and waterlogged, they are in need of rejuvenation, renovation and upgrading and there are a number of different avenues that this can be achieved. An ATP or STP can become poor draining, have flooding on the surface and have poor seams due to compaction and contamination within the pile which makes the system lose its porosity.

Over time the joints or seams of the synthetic pitch can become weak and need renovation and upgrading, this can be done by a simple joint procedure. Another problem on the surface is the build-up of mud, moss and algal squidge from falling debris and grime on the surface. Algal squidge and moss can cause the system to lose its porosity and will cause the kickabout court to poorly drained. There are a few things that we can do when we renovate and rejuvenate the sports pitch and bring back the good playing qualities of the facility. The extraction and removal of the silica sand is a vital part of this maintenance as this will allow the carpet to be free of the contaminated material and will allow the carpet to drain water more efficiently. The new silica sand or rubber can then be installed to complete the renovation and upgrade.

Astroturf MUGA sports pitches are suitable for multisports like football, futsal, rugby and netball and this is why it is vital that the area is sufficiently maintained as it is heavily used. Other maintenance requirements for sand-filled astroturf MUGA pitches can include game line repairs, patch repairs, and complete new surfacing. We are prime sport surfacing contractors and have helped to construct and maintain many of these facilities. We also do not have any minimum or maximum requirements for our maintenance and construction projects.

Astroturf MUGA pitches have been designed and built to sizes like 39m x 19m to 102m x 62m and we would be delighted to be able to help you with your maintenance needs. Prices, quotes, funding, budgets and specifications are all areas of our expertise. 5 A Side Football MUGA Surface in Gloucester Case Study

Having a synthetic 5-a-side football MUGA facility built is a popular choice for many clubs and schools in the UK as it can often be difficult to look after a natural grass pitch, especially during periods of wet weather.

Artificial turf sports pitches can be used for many activities including football, rugby and hockey as the specification of the grass carpet can be designed differently to suit the needs of each sport. This makes the specification versatile, meaning that schools and clubs can use the surface all year round and for a number of different activities. Check out this post to see the benefits of MUGA pitches in schools.

MUGA facilities can also help promote teamwork and develop a range of skills, which you can see more about in this post.

5-a-side Football MUGA Construction

We recently built a 5-a-side football MUGA in 3G synthetic grass for a client in Gloucester who wanted to convert an unusable grass area into a multi-purpose all-weather sports facility. Before we could begin the construction for the 5-a-side MUGA facility, we had to excavate the existing natural grass down to the desired depth to prepare a suitable foundation for the installation.

After excavating the ground for the sports pitch, the next part of this construction project was to put in a porous stone sub base layer to act as a strong and durable sports pitch foundation. The dynamic stone sub base is specially designed to be used in sports facility installations because it’s porous to allow efficient drainage, and it is very long-lasting and strong.

We compacted the stone down to lock each of the particles together and keep it secure before the next stage of the multi-use sports surface construction. Next, we added a macadam base layer on top of the porous stones, this makes a smooth foundation that is perfect for the 3G synthetic carpet to be installed onto.

Take a look at the video below to see the construction process for this facility from start to finish:

Installing the 3G Grass Carpet

To install the 3G synthetic turf for the 5-a-side football MUGA, we rolled the carpet out onto the macadam base and glued the pieces down at the edges and the seams. The specialised glue is designed to be extremely long-lasting and durable so the artificial turf carpet will stay in place through heavy year-round use.

Once the synthetic grass has been installed, we then put in a sand and rubber infill which keeps the artificial fibres upright and creates the right playing characteristics for the 5-a-side football pitch facility. Over time this infill can become compacted and dirty, so it’s important to regularly maintain it by drag brushing to keep the particles evenly spread across the surface.

After the 3G synthetic grass had been fully installed and the line markings were applied, the end result for this project was a top-quality synthetic football pitch facility that can be used for a number of activities. 3G pitches are becoming more popular in the UK because they have similar playability to natural grass but they require much less maintenance.

Once installed, a synthetic grass surface is a lot cheaper to run and maintain and can be used all year round in all weather conditions so the facility can be rented out to generate extra revenue. Check out this post to find out more about maintaining these pitches throughout the year.
