Promoting Teamwork With Multi Use Games Areas

One way of schools encouraging teamwork is through multi use games areas on the playground. Also known as MUGAs, these are sports facilities which can be used for a number of different activities. Giving children the opportunity to play different sports helps them to work together and cooperate.

These areas can be used both during lessons and outside of school to increase activity. They help you make the most of your outdoor space meaning you can accommodate a variety of games. Find out more about MUGA pitches and see which design options we have available.

Why is Teamwork Important?

During school, children develop vital social and communication skills which are necessary for later life. Being able to work with others and form relationships is extremely important, and playing team games helps to encourage this. There are several other things that kids can learn from being part of a team, some of these include:

  • Friendship
  • Sportsmanship
  • Cooperation
  • Leadership
  • Respect
  • Discipline
  • Determination

All these things are crucial for school pupils and also into adult life. There are plenty of benefits of using MUGA sports courts in schools to develop teamwork. All these skills can transfer off the pitch and into the classroom or daily life. Visit this post to see how being active at school can help manage children’s behaviour.

MUGA Designs for Schools

There are several different designs and specifications for MUGA facilities which we can install in schools. It depends which sport you want to play and what budget you have available, but we can provide a range of options to help you decide. Here are some of the different products we offer:

  • Tarmac – A hard and durable surface commonly used for school sports facilities. Find out more on this page.
  • Multisport Turf – A synthetic carpet suitable for a number of different sports.
  • 3G Grass – Artificial turf often used for playing football and rugby.
  • Polymeric Rubber – Another hard court specification with a variety of colours available.

All of these can be customised to suit your requirements and we’ll be able to provide a quote if you get in touch with us. Whether you want a simple outdoor space for recreational sports or a higher standard surface for competitive events, we can provide the right design and specification for you.

The Benefits of Working as a Team

Teaching children to work together as a team is an important part of early development. They should be able to form relationships and friendships by interacting with other pupils. This helps them work better in the classroom and sets them up with key skills they will use throughout life.

Children learn how to take turns, share and expand their knowledge by working in groups. This also provides opportunities for conflict resolution and learning to listen to each other’s point of view. Pupils can also be exposed to new ways of thinking which helps with understanding lessons and progressing academically.

How Multi Use Games Areas Help

Having these facilities at schools encourages children to get into sports which they may not have considered otherwise. Multiple sets of line markings can be applied to one surface, making more efficient use of the space compared with having more than one facility. Depending on the surfacing you choose, kids can play football, basketball, tennis, netball and more all in the same place. Offering a range of games is great for increasing exercise levels at school as kids can play at break times and in after-school clubs.

We can also provide fencing to go around the sports facility to keep it safe and prevent the loss of equipment. These diverse areas are perfect for children of all ages and they teach skills which are easily transferred into lessons and everyday life. Team sports such as football, netball and basketball are great for young people when it comes to making friends and working to a common goal.

The video above shows our team installing a MUGA court in London. This particular design was made using polymeric rubber surfacing which is ideal for playing basketball, netball and other sports.

For more information on promoting teamwork with multi use games areas, contact us today and we’ll provide you with some more information. Let us know if you’re looking to have a new facility installed and we’ll be happy to give you an idea of costs for the work.

We have worked on various projects throughout the UK at schools, nurseries and clubs, so we have plenty of experience and professional knowledge.

Size of 5 a Side Court MUGA

5 a Side MUGA sports courts have a minimum playing size of 25.91m x 16.76m. The dimensions you choose will depend on the design you want for your facility. Many schools and clubs have these pitches for playing football, both as practise and for matches. Having the smaller recreational size can help to cut costs compared to installing full sized areas.

Alternatively, many organisations choose to install multi use games areas which accommodate multiple sports. If you choose this, then the dimensions could alter to suit other activities. The maximum 5 a side pitch size is 25.91 x 42.62m. The larger playing surface will mean the construction cost will be higher. We try to make our quotes cost effective, but it all depends on the customer’s budget.

You can speak to our team today and get a price for installing one of these facilities. The dimensions and sizes will vary depending on what you need and this can also affect costs. Just fill in our contact form and let us know what you’re looking for so we can offer more advice. You can also find out more about all weather pitch floodlights along with other accessories we offer.

5 a Side Pitch Designs

The MUGA surfaces come in a few different options. See below to find out more about each product:

  • 2G Synthetic Turf Carpet – Suitable for playing football and hockey, popular at schools.
  • 3G Artificial Grass – Ideal for football and rugby, contains rubber infill for natural playing qualities.
  • Polymeric Rubber Surface – Play football, tennis, netball and basketball, good ball bounce and slip resistance.
  • Macadam Sports Court – Multi use qualities for tennis, netball, football and basketball, perfect for schools.

The 5 a side pitch designs completely depend on how you would like to use the area. Lots of schools and clubs choose to have multi sports markings so they can make the most out of the facility. The game line marking or sports lines for 5 A side football are normally white with a 50mm width. We also offer different colours to mark out individual sporting activities. Sport lines can normally be touched up or replaced during the life of the sports surfacing.

Dimensions of a 5-a-Side Facility

When it comes to designing these areas, the dimensions of a 5-a-side facility can be tailored to suit each project. Since these pitches are generally used for recreational purposes, there are no strict guidelines to follow. It’s completely up to you and your budget, and we can offer a design and quote to suit you. Take a look at this 5 a Side MUGA Construction in Gloucester to see one of our projects from start to finish.

You can also have a look at the video below to see how the work was done by our team:

The 5-a-side football pitches are usually best to be played on 3G synthetic turf surfaces because these give the best playing characteristics. The synthetic 3G sports surfacing is an artificial grass carpet infilled with sand and rubber infill. There is sometimes a need for a shockpad beneath this third generation sports grass dependent on the accreditation they are looking to achieve.

Coating of Synthetic MUGA Surfacing With Acrylic Coatings

There are a number of different coating options that are now available if your sports surface requires or has the need for it. Anti-slip coatings such as Acrylic, water-based and PU Polyurethane can all now be used, depending on the synthetic MUGA surfacing. If the Multi-Use Games Area is synthetic, an Acrylic coating can be used.

Other MUGA surfaces such as EPDM Polymeric rubber, a polyurethane coating can be used and a Porous Macadam surface, a Water Based coating can be used. All of the anti-slip coatings that are available to use can all be made in colours such as red, green, white and blue and can all be used to coat surfaces that will house sports like Basketball, Football, Netball and Tennis.

These coatings can be anti-slip and can comply with TRRL 75 for Netball and TRRL 60 for multisports. As all synthetic MUGA surfacing specifications can be constructed to all different dimensions and sizes to suit individual requirements, the preferred application method is an airless sprayer, due to the speed of the application, although a paint roller can still be used.

Multi-use games areas or ball courts can all be upgraded, resurfaced, cleaned and recoloured using these types of coatings. New line markings can also be installed at the same time, normally with a line width of 50mm. Funding and budgets for these projects can be an issue so specifications and designs can be tweaked to suit most projects and sporting uses.

Safety should be the main priority for any sports facility, especially at a school where young children will be using synthetic MUGA surfacing for a range of activities. This is why it is always advised to have an acrylic or polyurethane non slip paint coating applied to improve the traction of the surfacing and to prevent injury from slips and trips.

Regular maintenance should always be carried out for synthetic MUGA surfacing to remove dirt and debris which could contaminate the area and make it flooded and slippery underfoot. After a while, a new layer of anti slip coating and line markings may need to be applied to bring back the best performance qualities and to ensure that the facility remains safe for use.

We have installed countless sports facilities at various locations in the UK, ranging from full-sized pitches, multi-use sports courts and athletics facilities. We are experts in the construction and maintenance of synthetic MUGA surfacing and we would be happy to speak with you about any enquiry you have.

Coating of Synthetic MUGAs Surfacing With Water Based Coatings

There are now lots of sports facilities in the UK which are in need of renovation and upgrade, along with the many new full construction sites. These surfaces, which are often Synthetic MUGAs or Multi Use Games Area can be built or made to most sizes and specifications and this involves the recoating of the surface. The surface coating can be tailored to suit different budgets, sizes and sporting requirements. The typical surface coating for a Synthetic or AGP is a water-based anti-slip finish which is made in colours such as white, green, blue and red and the game line marking can also be used using the same coating.

These anti-slip coatings which will comply with either TRRL 60 for multisports or TRRL 75 for Netball, can also be used when existing surface finishes require an upgrade, resurface or recolouring. MUGA surfaces are all designed to cater for numerous sports like Basketball, Netball, Tennis and Football and the kickabout courts are also made in different types. Porous Macadam and EPDM Polymeric surfaces are also available to use and these will have anti-slip coatings like Acrylic coatings and PU Polyurethane applied as standard. All of these different sports surfaces are normally repainted using an airless sprayer as this method offers a larger m2 coating per minute as a rolling method.

We can help clients with all aspects of these upgrades, new constructions and maintenance issues as we are a turnkey contractor in this sector. With help with funding/budgets to costing issues and designs, please complete our contact form and we can help you with this information, along with quotations and advice.

STP, ATP, MUGA 4G All Weather Pitches

STP, ATP, MUGA 4G All Weather Pitches are all over the UK if you google locations like in schools, colleges, universities and sports grounds. However many ask what is a 4G pitch and is this synthetic sports surface adequate for hockey, football, rugby or tennis.

Your simple answer is that the 4th generation synthetic turf is designed in many ways differently from one supplier to another contractor. All companies are trying to push the latest product to the high street and all claiming to have the latest materials but in all honesty how can we choose between a good artificial grass supplier to another. My first question to yourself is to ask the suppliers how long they have been trading and make sure they have been around for over 10 years because the last thing as a customer you want is to have a contractor whos not there in a few years once they have built and constructed you a 500k sports pitch.

4G artificial grass is basically at present a grey area where no test has been approved to set out that this is officially a 4th generation in the sports surfacing world. Many carpets can meet FIFA, FA, FIH, RFU and IRB but none has officially been recognised as a 4G solution.

What is likely to make a 4G surface – probably will be a tweak in the sub base, the shockpad or the infill to the artificial turf. Has times have evolved from the plastic pitches era we are now in a position where the playing characteristics are becoming better and better.

If you would like any specifications, costs, prices or quotes on all STPs, MUGAs, ATPs or full size pitches please call 01625 445760 or visit our website which will run through all the flooring options available and anything from an enclosed floodlit full sized soccer pitch to repairs on a rugby pitch MUGA can be carried out at Soft Surfaces Ltd.

Type 3 Polymeric Surfacing MUGA

Type 3 polymeric surfacing MUGA facilities are rubber surface specifications which are ideal for a variety of sports with the main sport as netball. Other activities played on the multi use games area will be football, tennis, basketball, athletics and 5-a-side football.

Polymeric Surfacing Specification

The Type 3 polymeric material is commonly installed in schools and is designed to have a high slip resistance rating for netball. The polymeric system is made up of EPDM rubber crumb granules which are mixed together with a binder and then laid onto a macadam base. An anti slip paint coating is then applied to give the stable playing characteristics and the rubber EPDM surface gives the sport surface a cushioned underfoot feel. Line markings can also be applied to the flooring contrasting coloured non slip paint to distinguish between the different sports which the facility will be used for.

Once the polymeric surfacing has been installed, there is the option to have a range of extra accessories and equipment included with the full construction project. These could be fencing in a variety of heights from 3m-5m, sports floodlighting, and maintenance equipment to help you keep your surface sport court in top condition. Having these extra accessories can help you make the most out of your new sport facility by giving you the opportunity to rent it out to other clubs and teams for training sessions and competitive matches in the evening.

Polymeric Sports Surface

This surface is composed of a rubberized crumb and mixed with a binding agent. The rubber utilised is wonderful for sports a result of the bounce and grip attributes the surfacing possesses. Netball, tennis, long jump runways and high jump zones traditionally have this type of flooring. Polymeric rubber surfaces are permeable, so this means they can be utilized year-round. Polymeric wet pour is available in a selection of colours.

You ought to thoroughly clean your sport surface frequently to maintain it in great condition. Sweeping is very good to get rid of any sort of contamination. If perhaps your sports pitch will need more specialist maintenance then our pro companies can come to site.

We can carry out the installation of EPDM sport surfacing for a number of schools, colleges and sport clubs across the United Kingdom. If you’d like to see one of our installations, please see the video below:
