Hey guys, it’s Dan here. Today we’re going to be showing you a 3G pitch construction that we carried out in Birmingham, West Midlands.

So previously this surface was an uneven field in need of attention, and the client wanted an artificial surface in order for the facility to be used all year round. They got in contact. We got to work. So the great thing with the 3G artificial pitches we install is that they are all-weather pitches perfect for use across the entire year. Additionally, this surface type requires no cutting or trimming like natural grass, making it an extremely popular choice across the country.

Here at Soft Surfaces, we have over 20 years of experience installing the highest quality 3G sports pitches for a variety of clients nationwide. From full-size sports stadiums to leisure centres in schools, there really is no job too big or too small for us. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’re interested in our services.

This client wanted to use their 3G sports pitch exclusively for football. So as a result of this, we installed the relevant line-markings. 3G can actually also be used for sports such as rugby and lacrosse. So depending on your needs, we can install the relevant line markings for whatever sport or sports you’d like for the facility.

So as you can see now, the job has been completed and the client was extremely pleased with the outcome, both from a quality and appearance point of view. Whilst we are a company that works nationwide, we’ve done lots of work in the West Midlands area, and because of this we rank in Google for the following key words: “West Midland synthetic pitch experts”, “Specialists in 4G turf Birmingham”, “Best company for sports pitches West Midlands”, “Artificial grass installers Birmingham”, “Top fake turf provider West Midlands”, and much more.

Benefits of a 3G Pitch in Birmingham, West Midlands

Having a 3G Pitch installed in Birmingham, West Midlands areas has many benefits, these include the following:

Low Maintenance

3G Pitches are more expensive, however you save money on the maintenance and can be used more often. Once you have payed the upfront cost, there isn’t any major maintenance costs required to keep the surface usable all year round.

Durability

Unlike natural grass, 3G Pitches can be used all year round and can withstand much more usage than real grass. With synthetic surfaces you will be able to perform your best all year round and have the guarantee that you can use the surface whenever you want.

Better Performance

Due to the advanced technology being put into artificial surfaces, performances has been increased so players can actually move quicker and more freely with their movements. The rubber in the synthetic surface allows the ball to roll and bounce as if it was real grass.

3g Artificial Sports Pitch Resurfacing Contractors

As specialist 3G Artificial Sports Pitch Resurfacing Contractors we work nationwide throughout the UK.

In the UK there is a huge array of old worn sand-filled pitches mostly used for football.

The preferred artificial football surface specification is a 3G which is sand + rubber filled synthetic turf. These 3G surfaces are also advertised as a 4G pitch or 5G pitch surface.

Why Resurface your Synthetic Football Pitch?

Astro turf sand filled surfaces will eventually reach the end of their lifecycle.

The performance properties will begin to decrease and playing characteristics like ball bounce, ball roll, slide resistance, and its drainage properties will begin to degrade as it passes the end of its life.

This is why artificial pitch resurfacing is so important as it gives the facility the perfect opportunity to improve their sports pitch with new and high-performance properties.

The 3G Artificial Sports Pitch Resurfacing Process

The process of resurfacing an all-weather pitch into a 3G sport surface specification is:

  • Uplift and removal of existing worn carpet
  • Preparation works to sub base (i.e. checking drainage, shockpad levels and edging)
  • Repairs to damaged areas
  • Installation of the 3G artificial grass carpet
  • Lines to be cut in to be part of the synthetic carpet
  • All seams and joints glued and taped
  • Installation of the sand infill to hold the pile upright and weigh the carpet down
  • Installation of the rubber crumb infill to give the playing characteristics needed for football or rugby
  • Brushing to evenly distribute the infill ready for playing on the surface

Every re-surfacing project is unique and the solutions are individually tailored to each client so please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Why Choose a 3G Specification?

3G pitches are becoming the number one choice for many artificial turf sports pitches with football.

4G Pitches and 5G Turf Specification are being advertised but these products are just variations in the third generation artificial grass with sand and rubber infill.

The number one choice when choosing a synthetic surface for football is a 3G sport surface. Its specialist combination infill of rubber crumb and sand help to protect the grass from heavy tackles and provide perfect ball role.

3G Pitch Resurfacing Costs

The costs to resurface a 3G Pitch is approximately £140,000 in the UK.

These costs can vary significantly depending on the size and dimensions of the all weather pitch.

Other factors to consider is the quality of the synthetic turf carpet as this can massively change the costs to complete a 3G pitch resurface.

Lastly, some projects in the UK are on rooftops or obscure locations so this can affect the prices and quotation value.

We can price any project in the UK from the highlands in Scotland down to Devon. As nationwide resurfacing contractors get in touch for best prices on the 3G Artificial Sports Pitch Resurfacing installations.

There are plenty of case studies and testimonials of projects we can show you during your enquiry.

How Long Does It Take To Resurface An Artificial Sports Pitch?

It takes 3-5 weeks to resurface a full-sized artificial sports pitch into the latest 3G artificial grass sport surface.

This comprises of one week onsite uplifting and removing of the existing worn synthetic carpet.

1-2 weeks preparation works depending on the sub base and shock pad under the synthetic turf carpet.

Then finally two weeks to install the 3G artificial grass surfacing with infill and lines cut in.

The length of time to resurface an artificial sports pitch can vary depending on access and weather conditions so it is wise to project manage the works to take 5-8 weeks. Sports consultants usually allow two months as it allows a provisional sum for bad weather.

Artificial Pitch Framework Contractors

When building a new sports facility it’s important to choose a construction company that has the best skills and experience, this is why Councils, Sport England, governing bodies and large companies set up a group of artificial pitch framework contractors. This offers potential clients a way of choosing the best company for their sports facility installation without the hassle of councils and clubs having to send the project out to tender. Each of the selected contractors holds accreditations such as SAPCA, API or a specific governing body to meet safety requirements on a range of outdoor surfaces as well as CHAS for health and safety, and Constructionline.

Sport England Framework Agreement

The artificial pitch framework contractors agreement was set up to support new installations of outdoor sport surfaces as well as refurbishments to existing ones. These facilities can include multi-use games areas and synthetic grass pitches which can both be used for a number of sports such as tennis, football, hockey and athletics depending on the chosen specification. Specialist sport surfacing will always be chosen to meet the governing bodies for these sports, for example, FIFA and FA for football, FIH for hockey and IATS for rugby. Full construction of each of these facilities can be carried out through the framework scheme as well as additional maintenance work, application of line markings and additional equipment.

Be sure to contact our team today if you’d like some more information on the services we offer as specialist contractors. One of our experts would be happy to talk you through the process and offer a price for this work.

Currently, there are four Sport England framework agreements and these include the design and installation of artificial sports surfaces, external sports lighting, upgrades to existing facilities and modular solutions such as changing rooms and storage units. All of the selected artificial pitch framework contractors are accredited to carry out projects involving each of these agreements. This will ensure that you get a facility that is installed to the highest performance and safety standards for your chosen sports and activities.

Artificial Sport Surface Contractors

There are a number of requirements given to Sport England framework contractors which need to be met for each new project that is carried out. Work will begin with the chosen contractor making a visit to the site and carrying out a survey of the ground conditions and suitability for the project. A design will then be outlined to meet what the client is looking for in terms of surface type, functionality, size and appearance. The framework contractor will also prepare drawings and, if necessary, apply for planning permission on behalf of the client. A range of services can be offered by the chosen contractor to assist the client in creating a functional design that looks good and suits the chosen sports.

Artificial Grass Nationwide

Artificial Grass is all the rage throughout the UK whether it be a synthetic turf sports pitch for a professional football club or a domestic client wanting an artificial lawn for their garden. Artificial grass has many many positives, one being specifically for sports pitches because it gives the client an all-weather pitch they can play on that gives the same playing characteristics as natural grass. On the other hand artificial lawns are very beneficial because keeps maintenance costs down as the grass isn’t needed to be cut and is great for animals and as a play area surface. The artificial grass gets used on playgrounds, daycare centres, nurseries, schools, parks, college play areas, universities and leisure centres.

We have carried out installations of artificial grass, playground surfaces, sports surfacing, MUGA, ball court, polymeric surface, synthetic turf, 3g grass, all-weather pitch and third generation synthetic grass and we are able to carry out these projects across the country!

History of Artificial Grass

Artificial turf was first installed in 1964 on a prep school recreation area in Rhode Island. The material came to public prominence in 1966, when AstroTurf was installed in the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The state-of-the-art indoor stadium had attempted to use natural grass during its initial season in 1965, but this failed miserably and the field conditions were grossly inadequate during the second half of the season, with the dead grass painted green. Due to a limited supply of the new artificial grass, only the infield was installed before the Houston Astros’ home opener in April 1966, the outfield was installed in early summer during an extended Astros road trip and first used after the All-Star Break in July.

The use of AstroTurf and similar surfaces became widespread in the U.S. and Canada in the early 1970s, installed in both indoor and outdoor stadiums used for baseball and football. More than 11,000 artificial turf playing fields have been installed nationally. More than 1,200 were installed in the U.S. in 2013 alone, according to the industry group the Synthetic Turf Council. Information provided by wiki.

Maintaining Synthetic Pitches

We are also not only able to install, but also maintain these facilities in order to restore them to their initial state. Carrying out regular proactive maintenance to your facility is great thing to do to prevent extensive work needing to be done in the future, however if your surface does reach a point where it needs entirely rejuvenating then we can offer that service to you.

The cost of maintaining synthetic pitches really does vary from surface to surface, so the best way to find out what the cost of having this done would be is to simply contact us on our site and we will get back to you right away! Our company has decades of experience both installing and maintaining these facilities and can help you with any of your requirements!

Playground Grass Mats Safer Flooring

Grass Mats installed on playgrounds are designed to have holes in the rubberised tile to allow grass to grow through the surfacing system. They are designed in the specification to be installed directly onto the existing ground conditions so are a cheaper system option because do not need any surface groundworks and preparation.

The grass matting safety surfacing is ideal when the costs, prices and budget is low because is an alternative to the wetpour rubber crumb surfaces, rubber mulch safer flooring and therefore is pushed by many play companies because they obviously want to get more equipment on the parks.

The play area safety grass matting can come in various sizes and dimensions but the standard size seems to be 1.5m x 1m tile at a depth of 23mm. This provides a CFH of over 2m for the playground equipment but other sizes and depths can also be specified in the design.

For further details on the costs, specifications and product information of the grass matting safety surfacing please email scott@softsurfaces.co.uk where we will be able to assist you!!

Artificial Grass Nursery Play Area Flooring

Artificial Grass surfaces can be used for a Nursery Play Area because this type of flooring eliminates the need for mowing, as well as reducing mud and mess on the children and their clothing when they are playing outside during break times. The artificial grass play area surfacing is low maintenance and is a great all weather surface design for nurseries in the UK.

Artificial Nursery Play Area Specifications

With regards to the synthetic turf specifications then there are hundreds of different grades which can affect the prices of each individual project because obviously a low specification with little weight in the carpet will mean the costs are less and then a higher heavier weighted pile on the artificial grass would cost more to the client. See how the installation of artificial grass works if you are interested in having on of these surfaces at your home or public facility.

If people are wondering what is the difference between the lower specification of synthetic turf and higher design on artificial grass then it is the comfort underfoot and the heavier grass will feel softer underfoot and will also be more long lasting and durable than a cheaper grass grade.

If you would like some flooring options for nursery play areas including nursery equpment, playgrounds and pathways please fill in our contact form where we can provide product sheets and case studies of our previous work. We also offer artificial grass for schools in playgrounds and gardens to suit various sizes.

If you would like to make an enquiry regarding the installation or maintenance of an artificial nursery play area surface, or any other type of play or sports surface, as well as help with finance through funding grants please email funding-grants@hotmail.co.uk or visit our website at https://www.softsurfaces.co.uk/

5 Reasons Why Your Artificial Grass May Have Melted

Synthetic grass surfacing is starting to become a popular choice for homeowners who want a high-quality grass lawn but with as little maintenance as possible (no watering, weed killers or mowing). With the quality of artificial turf improving and its prices becoming more affordable, it’s no wonder that people are leaving behind natural grass and opting for a simpler alternative.

Artificial Grass Melting

Although there are many benefits of having an artificial turf lawn installed and contractors take great care in testing their products to ensure they offer the best possible quality and durability, there are also disadvantages that come with this type of surfacing.

We have recently been seeing a number of cases where lawns have needed repairing, or even resurfacing completely because the artificial grass has melted. This can happen when the temperature of the grass increases above the melting point of the polymer in the turf yarn. It then leaves you with, disintegrated, melted or even burnt artificial grass. This bizarre problem can be caused by a number of factors:

Reflective Surfaces – The top 4 possible reasons why your artificial grass has melted are as a result of intense heat being indirectly applied to the turf through sunlight reflecting off different surfaces in the surrounding area of the lawn:

  • Windows – A large surface area for sunlight to reflect off for a sustained period of time. You may have noticed artificial grass burning from windows on a nearby building reflecting light onto it.
  • Polished Gutters – Often dark colours which absorb heat and reflect light from their shiny surface.
  • Mirrors – Reflects sunlight at a high intensity off a large surface area.
  • Reflective Panels – On doors, sheds, outbuildings etc. These can also have a big surface area which light can reflect off for a long time.
  • Direct Heat- The final reason for synthetic turf melting is through direct application of heat:
  • Fire – Either through vandalism or stray embers from a barbecue. This kind of intense heat applied directly onto an artificial lawn can burn and melt the grass.

Solutions To Artificial Grass Melting

Artificial grass lawns can be repaired of resurfaced if they suffer damage from heat or sunlight. However, the best method of keeping your turf in the best condition is prevention – stopping the problem before it starts.

It is vital that a contractor installing a synthetic grass lawn assesses the area and identifies potential risks. They should find any areas which could be damaging to your artificial turf surface and deal with the problem. This could mean installing a screen to the outside of a window. You could even apply affordable non-reflective paint to panels or gutters which reflect the sunlight.

If preventing the reflection of light onto a particular area of your artificial grass is not possible, you could install an alternative feature. Things such as pebbles, a soil area with plants, a small tree or even a pond can work. This way you can enjoy the aesthetics of the high-quality grass surface whilst eliminating damage to the problem area.

Synthetic Grass Surfacing Options

When you choose to install a brand new artificial sports pitch for your school, college, club or leisure centre, it’s important that you explore all the options to ensure you get the best synthetic grass surfacing for the activities you want to play. There are a number of different specifications that we can offer to suit many sports including football, tennis, hockey and rugby. If you have any specific sports that you’d like to use the facility for, or if you want it to be suitable for all activities, we can help.

Take a look at some of the different sport surfacing specifications we install:

3G Synthetic Grass Surfacing

The 3G artificial grass specification is the most advanced synthetic turf sport surfacing option and is commonly used for football and rugby pitches. A rubber infill layer is installed into a 3G synthetic pitch to give natural playing characteristics. This then helps to protect players’ joints and muscles from injuries during sport. The rubber granules are applied within the fibres of the pitch along with an application of silica. This is designed to create a stable and comfortable playing surface for training and competitive matches. Many schools and clubs throughout the UK choose to have this type of artificial turf flooring installed. This is often done to replace damaged and worn out natural grass pitches which may be unsafe and unsuitable for use.

2G Sand Filled Turf

The sand filled synthetic grass surfacing specification is a versatile surface type which can be used for multi sports such as football and hockey. This all-weather pitch system has a layer of silica sand applied within the artificial turf fibres of the pitch surface. The infill helps to keep the fibres upright and promotes good playing characteristics. Sand filled artificial turf is a durable and long lasting pitch material. This is why it is very popular with schools and leisure centres where sports facilities have to withstand a lot of heavy use.

2G Sand Dressed Surfacing

The 2G sand dressed specification is very similar to the other 2G system as it has a layer of infill installed within the turf fibres. However, there is only a thin layer of sand as these artificial pitch carpets tend to have a shorter pile height. These qualities make sand dressed sports pitches perfect for playing hockey. The short pile height allows the ball to glide smoothly across the surface and the turf fibres are kept stable.

Multisport Needlepunch Surface

The Multisport needlepunch sports pitch material is a durable and hard wearing surface option which is similar to the Playrite Matchplay 2 system. The curly yarn fibres make the needlepunch synthetic specification an ideal choice for multi use games areas and athletics track facilities. This fibre bonded synthetic grass surfacing is commonly installed at primary schools in the UK as it comes in a range of bright colours. It also provides a soft impact absorbing sport surface to prevent injuries. It can also be designed with different coloured squares and sections so the a number of activities can be done at the same time.

Alternatives to Artificial Grass Pitches

If you’re thinking of installing a multi use games area, but you don’t think a grass pitch would be right for the sports you want to play, there are some alternatives which provide great playing characteristics for activities like tennis, netball and basketball. Polymeric rubber and macadam court surfaces are very common in the UK as they are suitable for use in all weather conditions and provide excellent ball bounce capabilities for a number of different sports. Polymeric and macadam surfaces can have anti slip paint coatings and line markings applied in contrasting colours to distinguish between the sports you choose to play.

We install a wide variety of different sport surfacing options at various locations in the UK and we would be happy to discuss your enquiry with you.
