Benefits of Wetpour Surfacing in Warrington, Cheshire

Having a wetpour surface installed in the Warrington, Cheshire area has many benefits, these include the following:

Longer Lifespan

Wetpour is a very long lasting and durable surface, our clients expect to get anywhere between 10-20 years from their wetpour surfacing if basic maintenance is carried out on the surface. One thing we advise our clients on is that the only real problem that will happen with your surface is the colour could fade if the surface is in the sun and you experience sun for large parts of the year.

Slip Resistant

Wetpour has been tested thoroughly to be the best slip resistance surface option you could possibly want to install, the reason for this is because the surface is commonly used in schools and making sure pupils are able to run freely without massive concerns for slipping is a priority for a lot of schools.

Easy to Repair

A huge benefit that our clients love about wetpour is that if the surface gets damaged or vandalised in any circumstances, it is possible to repair the small damaged area rather than replacing the whole surface.

Hey guys, it’s Dan here. Welcome to a wet pour playground surfacing installation in Watford, London. So as you can see from the initial photos, whilst the school looks truly fantastic, there really wasn’t a suitable area outside for the kids to be playing on during break times and lunchtimes. The school specified what they would like is a colourful, safe surface for the kids to use, whilst ensuring there were educational graphics installed to help children learn during playtime. They specified the surface, colours, and design, and we got to work.

So this actual job was carried out over 470 meters squared, and we installed wetpour rubber safety surfacing for this job. Wetpour is a brilliant service for play areas as it’s soft, spongy qualities ensure that it meets a critical fall height or CFH standards required. Wetpour is also highly customizable. And you can see that for this actual installation, the client wanted a combination of mainly green and yellow with various colour graphics installed. Again, the actual graphics can bespoke to your choice, and these can be planned with us during the inquiry stage.

Here at Soft Surfaces, we’re a nationwide company, and there really is no job too big or too small for us. So please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested.

So as you can see now, the surface has been fully installed. This area has now become a fully functioning playground, helping the kids to learn while staying active on a safe, spongy surface.

Hi guys it’s Dan here, and today we’re going to be showing you a Wetpour Repair in Liverpool, Merseyside.

This client came to us with an existing playground that had become damaged over time, and was in need of repairs for safety. When we explained the services we could provide for them, we were on site before we knew it.

So here at Soft Surfaces we understand that wetpour playgrounds can become effected over time from things such as vandalism, neglect and misuse.

With any play area across the UK, the severity of this damage can differ, and this obviously influences the works we may need to carry out.

For example, some wetpour surfaces simply need small perimeter repairs, whilst others may have damage so extensive that a full resurfacing may need to be carried out. This really varies from playground to playground, and is something we can discuss with you in detail during the enquiry stage.

Owning a play area comes with significant responsibility, as children’s safety should always be of the highest priority for use. Leaving a playground damaged can lead to rather serious implications in the future.

We’ve worked for over two decades both installing and maintaining this surface type for play areas nationwide, and no job is too large or too small for us to work on in the UK, so feel free to give us a call or an email if you are interested.

You can see from these photos now that the work we carried out has been completed, and the client was so happy to have their playground back to it’s best. This particular job just needed some perimeter repairs and repairs to a few areas of the wetpour itself.

Please see video transcript below:

00:05 Hey, you guys. It’s Dan from Soft Services here, and on this video we’re going to be showing you a wetpour installation and color design at a school in Glasgow.

First thing we do with this job is actually remove the previous surface, which obviously helps us then install our wetpours. You can see that being removed there on these photos.

Next up, the wetpour itself is actually prepared. You can see us here actually adding in the wetpour with the resin into the mixer ready to be actually installed with the surface. Wetpour’s a great surface really because it actually meets the critical fall height standard.

Obviously if a kid were to fall on the wetpour they’re a lot safer than falling on perhaps a concrete or any other kind of surface really for a playground.

It’s also a very customisable surface as well, which is great. We’ll get into that later on.

So now for the photos of the base course actually being installed. You can see the playground coming together now, with obviously the equipment around it and us fitting that.
And then next up we actually lay the graphics in the desired area.

So as I said earlier about them being customisable, you can actually fit many different graphics and educational hopscotches, all that kind of stuff, onto wetpour depending on what your needs are.

So now for the completed project. As you can see, the graphics are laid there. It looks really, really great. You’ve obviously got lots of animals in there for the kids and different hopscotch to be using.

I know the clients were actually incredibly happy with this install as well, with it being different colors and really making the playground stand out for them.

As we do a lot of work in the Glasgow area, we actually rank in Google for these phrases: “Glasgow play area designs,” “Scotland playground installation company,” “UK wetpour safety surface experts,” “Glasgow wetpour playground construction,” “multicolored playground in Scotland,” and even more than that.

So if you are interested in any prices or specifications of the surfaces that we install, please just find our website in the description of this video.

Thanks for watching, guys, and we hope to hear from you soon.

If you wish to find out more information on the installation of wetpour surfacing and the addition of EPDM rubber graphics, please enquire today. We will be happy to offer you a quote and some free advice.

Uv Degradation and Discolouration of EPDM Wetpour

Lots of children’s playgrounds have EPDM Wetpour surfaces to provide a colourful atmosphere with added safety qualities. The designs of this play surface can be varied as there is a variety of bright colours to choose from.

However over time the wetpour coloured rubber can be affected by UV degradation and discolouration. These are processes which occur when the flooring is exposed to high levels of radiation from the sun, and they can lead to changes in the overall appearance.

Find Out More

UV Degradation

Some colours of wetpour surfacing are more prone to higher levels of degradation from UV (ultraviolet) light exposure. This means that certain colours in the manufacturing process of the rubber can fade over time because they have been exposed to ultra violet radiation from the sun. Generally speaking, the brighter colours are more prone to UV Degradation. During this process the sunlight radiation attacks the synthetic polymeric within the EPDM material. This then leads to a loss of the original vibrant colour.

Check our our full wetpour colour range to see all of the different options we have available. The colours which are generally more susceptible to this deterioration include Purple, Bright Yellow, Pillar Box (bright) Red and Orange and we recommend applying these colours as smaller design features rather than main background colours. However different factors in the surrounding outdoor space will also have an impact on the overall affects. Please contact us and speak to a member of our team if you have any questions or you need some advice on a coloured wetpour play area design.

UV Discolouration

During the installation process for EPDM play surfacing, we mix the rubber granules for the wearing course with resin before laying onto the base course. A process of UV discolouration can occur when the resin reacts with the ultraviolet rays, causing it to turn a yellow/brown shade rather than clear.

This can then affect the appearance of the surface colour, of the laid rubber crumb and can mean that they do not truly represent the chosen colour design. The discolouration of outdoor play areas can happen with all colours of EPDM however, some show a more visible change than others.

For this reason, we often recommend using certain colours more than others to ensure that every playground we install has a high quality, long lasting finish. You should avoid large areas of Blue for example as bay lines can be more visible than on other colours.

Many schools, play groups and public parks have vibrant nursery play areas installed to capture children’s imaginations. These can include numerous design features and graphics which are completely customisable for each client. We always aim to complete our work to the highest possible standards. We’ll also ensure that we apply any aftercare maintenance where necessary.

The effects of UV degradation and discolouration will vary depending on a number of factors for each different site. Things like location, area size, and chosen colour will all have an effect on any weathering from sunlight. Other things like nearby trees and structures can affect this as well.

Please feel free to speak with a member of our team by filling in the contact form. We’ll gladly provide some further details on the EPDM play surfacing we supply . We would also be happy to send you over some more information regarding the colour Degradation and Discolouration. Alternatively one of our experts can speak to you about this personally.

Rubber Playground Surface Construction

Rubber playground surface construction is carried out in a number of locations around the UK. We can supply and install products to fit schools’ budgets and tailor quotes to suit you. These surfaces are commonly found at schools, nurseries and public parks.

Find Out More

Rubber Play Surface Costs

The costs and prices of the project depend on whether the area needs sufficient construction to help aid drainage. If it is at the bottom of a hill then a deeper excavation is needed and backfilled with porous stone. Doing this makes the rubber playground surface suitable for all weather conditions as it will be porous.

The design you choose can also affect the costs as the vibrant wetpour colours cost more than the standard black. Having multiple colours on the surface can also increase the price as we have to install adjoining colours on separate days. We also offer the choice of different shaped wetpour rubber graphics to make the facility even more fun.

People often choose to have these to add more activities onto the area and to make it educational. There are loads of shapes and designs we can provide including:

  • Alphabet snakes
  • Numbers
  • Roadways
  • Road signs
  • Animals
  • Phonics games
  • Hopscotch
  • Footprints

We have a huge catalogue of graphic inserts which we can send over if you would like to find out more about them. You can also see case studies of our previous work and some of the designs we can offer.

Installing Rubberised Playgrounds

The rubber playground surface is a porous system that consists of SBR rubber base and EPDM rubber wearing course. Construction for these facilities will go as follows:

  • Excavation of existing surface to the required depth
  • Installation of MOT Type 1 stone sub base to the area
  • Lay a tarmac layer onto the sub base with PCC edges
  • Installing the SBR base layer of the rubber system
  • Placing coloured graphic shapes in the chosen position on the area
  • Laying the EPDM wearing course on top of the SBR base and around any graphics

The play area surfaces are usually constructed by groundworks which include excavation, dig out then stone up of the area which is installed within an edge which is most common to be a PCC edge and not timber. Timber edges are cheaper but prone to shrinking so a pcc edge is always advised for rubber surface playground surfacing areas.

If your existing surface is already macadam of good quality we can lay the rubber surfacing straight onto this. You will need to ensure that the current macadam is fully porous so that water can drain completely through the surface and will not flood.

If you have any queries on the construction of a rubber play area facility then please contact us. We would be happy to answer any questions and provide quotes for a project. The pricing for rubber playground surface construction varies depending on many factors.

Yellowing, Discolouring of Rubber Crumb Wet Pour Surfacing

Aromatic binders (moisture curing) create a yellowing effect on all surfaces. The phenomenon is the result of the formation of transparent crystals during the curing process, which cause light to refract when passing through them in the same way as a simple prism. It is the light refraction when viewing the finished surface that gives the appearance of a yellow tint, the actual colour of the granule does not change as can be seen by cutting a cross section. The appearance of the surface will also vary depending on the position, the angle or the sunlight conditions from which it is viewed.

Talk To Us

The yellowing effect is most noticeable when colours such as blue or eggshell, where yellow and blue light combine to make green. The effect on the other colours is to make them appear darker. There is now way to completely avoid this effect with aromatic binders and care must be taken by specifiers and designers to ensure that the client is fully aware of how the finished surface will look.

Blending another colour, such as black, to produce a variegated finish can mitigate the impact of yellowing by reducing the visual impact. Large areas of blue should be avoided, as work lines will show up on this colour more than any other colour.

True Aliphatic binders can greatly reduce this effect initially but cannot claim to offer permanent protection or enhanced physical properties. However, aliphatic binders are three times more expensive that aromatic binders. Some binders marketed as being aliphatic do not use IPP isocyanides as a base and consequently cannot claim to be truly aliphatic.

Wet Pour Surface or Soft Rubber Surface is an impact absorbing surface which is made from EPDM recycled rubber. It is a porous, hard wearing, low maintenance product that is perfect for soft play surfaces. The change of surface can be done by expert installers. The existing area size and specification will determine the overall price for the upgrade of the surfacing. The removal of the rubber tiles is the first thing to do. This will leave a sub base of Concrete, Tarmac or MOT Type 1 Stone.

Wet Pour Surfacing will require a minimum thickness in able to work properly. If there is to be any play equipment on the area, the installers and specifiers will need to know of any Critical Fall Height information as this will determine the thickness of the product. 30mm is the minimum thickness of the Wet Pour. Installers will always need an edge to work to with the Rubber Crumb Surfacing so a timber edge may need to be installed around the perimeter of the soft play area, made up to the thickness of the finished product. Once this has been done, the Wet Pour can be installed. Finished In either Black, 12 different colours or a 50 – 50% mix colour fleck, you can endless colour options and numerous Wet Pour Graphics can even be designed and installed into the play area. Once the Wet Pour has been installed, leave for 36 hours and you will be left with a fantastic, hard wearing finish that will comply with even the strictest test from enthusiastic children!

Wetpour Band Perimeter Shrinkage Repairs

Wetpour Band Perimeter Shrinkage Repairs are very common in the UK because rubber crumb EPDM is prone to shrink and expand in adverse weather conditions. The shrinkage of the rubber usually pulls away from the perimeter edge and therefore a wetpour band repair is usually needed.

Our team can fix these issues by cutting around the edging and installing a new layer of wetpour. This makes the surface stronger and improves the appearance, as well as removing trip hazards. You will often find this flooring installed beneath children’s play structures to add safety qualities and protect against injuries.

Repairing Wetpour Edges

Band repairs can be done by purchasing a DIY wetpour repair kit or by a specialist surfacing contractor in playgrounds and at soft surfaces we can supply both options. The perimeter shrinkage usually needs to be cut back so that the existing rubber crumb EPDM has a sharp edge to install up to and the band strip is usually installed which commonly is in a contrasting colour to make it look like a graphic.

Below you can see a video of one of our projects where we repaired a play surface. The existing wet pour flooring had shrunk away from its edges and had left a gap. We cut away the loose edge and filled in a new application of rubber surfacing to smooth it over. This also had the effect of adding a nice border design around the perimeter of the area.

Rubber Playground Repairs

It’s important to maintain your play area surface if you want it to last as long as possible. This can be done by regularly brushing the area and applying a light jet wash to remove debris. Unfortunately, over time the flooring can become damaged and a wetpour repair may be required. Our team can complete this for you, or alternatively supply a DIY kit for you to carry out a small repair.
