00:05 Hi there. It’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here and on this video we’re gonna be showing you a wetpour installation in Prestwich, Bury.

00:12 So right off the bat, the first thing we do is actually examine the previous surface. As you can see, it’s a small Tarmacadam surface, this one. It really isn’t suitable for kids to be using on playgrounds, and there from that photo you can see it is in need of a resurface of some sort.

00:24 So as they specified a polymeric surface, which is another word for a wetpour surface, we actually have to install a sub-base, which is what you’re seeing from this video here. Wetpour surfaces are actually available in different colors and specifications, so if you are interested in having one installed, please just feel free to contact us and we can get back to you straight away.

00:40 And now finally, this still photo just sees the sub-base actually installed onto the surface there. Next up we actually place the graphics down so you can see we’re kind of getting the idea of where we’re going to install the wetpour around that, as well as the graphics that are going to be fitted. And now finally here comes the completed project with the whole thing done.

00:56 So as you can see it’s a real big transformation from this very small area. Actually makes the area look a lot bigger than it actually is. I mean, obviously it gives it that kind of educational use, with the hopscotch, etc, but also means that the kids are safe, which is the most important thing really for these surface types. There’s a great photo there, as you can see, with the hopscotch as well.

01:13 As we’ve done a lot of work in the Bury area, we actually rank in Google for the following key phrases: Wetpour Surfacing Company in Bury, Prestwich Polymeric Flooring Installers, Bury Play Area Surface Construction, Best Playground Surfaces in Prestwich, Activity Flooring Installation in Bury and much, much more.

01:29 So if you’re interested in this surface types or any of the other services we provide, please just contact us on our website, which you can find in description of this video. Thank you very much for watching guys and I’ll see you guys later.

Please see a video below showing a recent wet pour rubber safety surface that we installed in Chelmsford, Essex. This highlights the process of laying from sub base to final wearing course EPDM layer in a fantastic design whilst also incorporating preformed graphics.

Please see video transcript below:

00:07 Hi there. This is Dan from Soft Surfaces here and today we’re going to be showing you a wetpour installation in the Chelmsford, Essex area.

00:14 So the first thing we did for this was actually remove the existing surface, so these photos here show a completely stripped back stone surface, which we actually removed the existing surface from that. Then after that the surface was actually marked, so those markings represent where the wetpour is going to be installed. So, you know, there’s the rough area that’s showing the area size.

00:31 Next up, the SBR base is prepared and installed on the top of the surface, so you can see that here on this video which is probably one of the crucial parts of the installation. Next up, the wearing course is then applied. So, as you can see, the color is starting to come through now, it’s starting to look a lot more like the wetpour playground that we want to install.

00:49 So the final installation is now done. You’ll see from these photos here it looks absolutely fantastic, ready for the kids to play multiple games on. And on this actual particular installation, we used many colors including reds, greens, yellows as you can see, and it really helps the surfaces stand out.

01:06 Thanks a lot for watching, guys and I’ll see you guys later.

00:06 Hi guys, it’s Dan from Soft Surfaces here, and today this video is a colour wetpour installation at HMNB Faslane.
So the first thing we do is actually mark off the old ground for the installation. So as you can see those white lines there represent what we’re going to be installing. There it is around the slide for example.

00:23 Next, the SBR base is actually installed over the existing tarmacadam surface, so keep your surface there and we actually install the base which is ready for the wetpour to be applied onto it. So as you can see from the photos here, that’s then applied giving out a different texture over the tarmac and then like I said, ready for the color wetpour to be installed.
Next up, the wearing course is actually then applied to the surface.

00:43 So you can see here that obviously the color is down. It’s really helping to transform the look of the facility, and finally the completed project now. What is a Wet Pour Repair Kit?

A wet pour repair kit is a DIY kit that consists of the right ratio of rubber and polyurethane binder to mix and carry out small repairs yourself on-site.

Depending on the extent of the repair, the kit can contain a base (SBR) or a wearing course (EPDM rubber).

Soft Surfaces have been trading since 1997 and have plenty of experience within the play surfacing industry.

We have created the perfect mix of rubber granules and specialist glue, which enables anyone to carry out small localised repairs, saving on cost and time (a precious commodity for most schools and nurseries).

Why Would You Need a Wet Pour Repair Kit?

You would need a Wet Pour Repair Kit to maintain the safety of your playground surfaces, ensuring that they meet critical fall height standards and provide a secure play environment for children.

These repair kits are designed to offer comprehensive coverage for repairing and restoring playground surfaces with ease.

By using a Wet Pour Repair Kit, you can ensure that any damaged areas on the playground are fixed promptly, preventing potential hazards and maintaining a smooth and safe playing surface.

Safety gloves should always be worn when applying the repair materials to protect your hands and ensure safe handling. It’s essential to follow the instructions provided with the kit to ensure proper application and maximum effectiveness.

What is Included in a Wet Pour Repair Kit?

A Wet Pour Repair Kit typically includes essential components such as the rubber crumb, binder, and detailed technical data to assist in repairing and restoring wetpour rubber surfaces effectively.

The top layer in the kit is a crucial element, serving as the protective covering that enhances the durability and resilience of the repaired area. It is specially formulated to withstand heavy foot traffic, weather elements, and general wear and tear.

The binder plays a key role in ensuring proper adhesion between the existing wet pour surface and the repair material, resulting in a seamless finish.

When utilising the kit, users can access detailed technical data that provides guidance on application techniques, curing times, and optimal conditions for the repair process.

This information is invaluable in achieving a successful outcome and prolonging the lifespan of the wetpour rubber surface.

Materials

The materials included within a repair kit consists of rubber crumb and binder.

These components play essential roles in effectively repairing and maintaining wet pour surfaces.

The wetpour edge primer, specifically, acts as a bonding agent that ensures a strong connection between the existing surface and the repair material, enhancing durability.

The rubber crumb brings flexibility to the repair, aiding in withstanding varying weather conditions without cracking or breaking.

Instructions and Safety Precautions

Proper laying instructions and safety precautions are crucial aspects of using a Wet Pour Repair Kit, ensuring the correct application of materials such as Polyurethane resin and the use of safety gloves to protect against potential hazards.

Remember that safety should always come first when preparing to use a Wet Pour Repair Kit. To shield your hands from harmful chemicals, wear safety gloves.

The next step is to set up your mixing tub, where you will combine the Polyurethane resin with the appropriate hardener.

Ensure that the surface you are repairing is clean and dry before starting the application process. Stir the materials thoroughly in the mixing tub to achieve a uniform consistency, and then carefully pour the mixture onto the damaged area.

You will need to use a Stanley knife for precision cutting, along with a plastering trowel for smooth application.

The application of a Wet Pour Repair Kit ensures durable and long-lasting results, with the EPDM 1 – 4mm granulate providing resilience and longevity to repaired areas, enhancing the overall lifespan of playground surfaces.

EPDM granules, ranging from 1 to 4mm in size, play a crucial role in reinforcing the repaired sections by offering exceptional elasticity and durability.

This specialised material serves as a protective layer that withstands heavy usage and weather challenges, safeguarding the playground surface from premature wear and tear.

The incorporation of EPDM granulate not only boosts the aesthetic appeal of the repaired areas but also ensures a safe and secure environment for children to play, promoting the longevity of the overall surface structure.

When selecting the right Wet Pour Repair Kit, consider factors such as the completeness of the kit, compatibility with your surface type, and the specific repair needs of your playground to ensure optimal results.

Ensure that the Complete Wetpour Playground Surfacing Repair Kits you are evaluating contain all necessary components for a thorough repair job.

This may include binder, rubber granules, mixing tools, and instructions. Check the kit’s compatibility with your playground’s surface material, whether it is asphalt, concrete, or existing wetpour surfacing.

Choosing the right product variant is crucial as different kits cater to specific repair requirements. Opt for patch repair kits for minor damages, while larger areas may require full resurfacing kits.

Assess the extent of damage before deciding to ensure your playground’s longevity and safety.

Wet Pour Resin UV Colour Change

EPDM rubber playgrounds are installed at many school and nursery organisations. Something that can affect these projects is a wet pour resin UV colour change. The industry in general, including our team, uses Aromatic resin. Colour change can occur and is gradual so it is not always noticeable. It can be more prominent when you lay the surfacing in very high temperatures or bright sunlight.

Get in Touch

The polyurethane resin binder which combines the rubber crumb reacts to the ultraviolet radiation. This then causes it to show a yellow / brown tinge. Usually the change will happen when the we install the wetpour and it is curing overnight.

The surface might appear as one colour when we lay it and then end up looking slightly different the next day. This phenomenon is the result of the formation of transparent crystals during the curing process, which cause light to refract when passing through them in the same way as a simple prism.

It is the light refraction when viewing the finished surface that gives the appearance of a yellow tint. The actual colour of the granule does not change as can be seen by cutting a cross section. The appearance of the surface will also vary depending on the position, the angle or the sunlight conditions from which you view it

We would be more than happy to offer more information on wet pour resin UV colour change if necessary. Simply get in touch with our professionals using the enquiry form provided and we will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

UV Discolouration of Wetpour

If your surface has UV discolouration, you may consider installing a UV stable resin when resurfacing. We carry out services to prevent the UV discolouration of wetpour in order to maintain the original colour of your surfacing without any changes due to the sunlight.

We’d recommend you take this into consideration before installing the wetpour. If you would like more information on the discolouration, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Resin Colouring Change

It is more noticeable in certain colours such as light grey, light blue, eggshell and beige. However, depending on conditions, all the coloured specifications are subject to slight changes as a result of sun exposure or high temperatures. The effect on other colours is to make them appear darker.

There is evidence which shows that the effects of ultraviolet rays do reverse over time, and the resin can lose the yellow tinge. This then allows the rubber granules to revert back to their original shade again. There is no way to completely avoid this effect with Aromatic binders. Installers must take great care to ensure that the client is fully aware of how the final surface will look.

Please contact our team if you have any questions about play area flooring design and installation. We’d be happy to offer you some information sheets and professional advice.

You can’t prevent the wet pour resin colouring change when using the standard Aromatic polyurethane binder. We normally use this during the mixing process. True Aliphatic resin can greatly reduce this effect initially. However, it still cannot still claim to offer permanent protection or enhanced physical properties.

However aliphatic resin is significantly more expensive to use and as a result very seldom used. The typical Extra Over costs are £30.00/m² over standard Aromatic resin.

Installing Children’s Playground Surfaces

The installation of wetpour rubber surfacing is common throughout the UK as it provides children with a vibrant and exciting outdoor space, with added safety qualities. This makes it perfect for use in areas with equipment such as climbing frames, trim trails and swings.

Due to the possible changes in appearance that can occur we would usually advise having black EPDM. You could also select one of our standard colour range core colours or consider a 50:50 blend of black with a standard colour when installed in larger areas.

Wetpour graphic features can be added which is a way of adding smaller coloured graphics to create a more interesting design. There are plenty of graphics to choose from including numbers, letters, targets, rockets and loads of other educational features.

Wetpour Play Surfacing Maintenance

Wetpour play surfacing maintenance ensures that any debris and contaminations on the surfacing are eliminated to prevent them from creating issues. Power washing expert services can manage in areas which are difficult to reach. This surface was created to be entirely permeable. Therefore fluids may pass through the pores in the surface to stop any kind of flooding.

It’s vital that you retain these kinds of qualities in great condition to stop debris from clogging up any holes. This might result in floods throughout wet months, making the surfacing unusable. It may potentially be dangerous since the establishment being slippy could lead to damages. When the surface is past upkeep, you will need to have servicing.

Wetpour Sub Base Specifications

Wetpour rubber surfacing is extremely popular for children’s play areas throughout the UK. It is made up of a two-tier system consisting of an SBR shockpad and a coloured EPDM wearing course. As specialist contractors of wetpour, we are able to install this flooring type onto a number of wetpour sub base specifications.

It is important to correctly prepare the ground before the safety surface is put down to ensure a strong and durable finish. Without the right groundworks, there are risks of the surfacing breaking up, being unstable and requiring wet pour repairs in the future.

Please get in touch with us through our contact form if you would like to install one of these playground safety surfaces. We have worked with many schools and nurseries and would be happy to provide a quote for you.

Suitable Bases for Wetpour

The best types of base for this rubber play flooring are smooth, permeable, strong surfaces. This is important as we need to make sure that the school playground flooring will be strong and safe for use by children every day. Here are some common specifications that we can lay wetpour onto.

Porous Stone Base

One of the most commonly used wetpour sub base specifications in a playground is a porous stone surface. This is made up of lots of loose stones which, when compacted, provide a stable and permeable finish. The porosity means that water will drain through it and into the ground, reducing any risk of flooding on the play area.

Laying this type of foundation for a playground surface will typically use this process:

  • Excavate the ground to a 125mm depth, plus the depth of wetpour to lay (minimum 40mm).
  • Install PCC edgings across each side of the area.
  • Lay and compact the layer of stones to a depth of 125mm.

We can then lay the rubber playground surfacing directly onto this. Many clients will choose to install the groundworks in this way as it is the most simple and cost effective method.

Open Textured Macadam

Macadam (or tarmac) is a hard and durable material which provides a great foundation for wet pour play surfaces. It is porous which means any water that drains through the playground flooring itself will then drain through the base and into the ground below. This helps to prevent water from sitting on the surface and causing flooding to the area.

The process of installing the rubber surfacing with a porous open textured macadam sub base would be as follows:

  • Excavate the existing ground to a depth of 150mm, plus the depth of wetpour surfacing which we will lay.
  • Lay PCC edges along each side of your chosen area.
  • Install and compact permeable stone to a depth of 100mm.
  • Install and screed 50mm of open textured macadam.

Once this is complete and the tarmac has been left to cure fully, our team can lay the chosen wetpour system on top. Whilst the option of a macadam foundation does provide the most durable finish, it is not always cost-effective for every project.

It also requires extra time to cure before our team can install the playground surface itself. If you need to reduce the costs and duration of your project, we’d recommend the porous stone sub base as this still provides a suitable foundation.

No Fines Concrete

We can install rubber play surfacing onto a permeable concrete specification. This usually consists of limestone chippings mixed with neat cement and water. Due to this base surface being ‘no fines’ it also offers porosity as it doesn’t contain any smaller pieces of stone which could block up the air holes. Therefore water is able to soak through it and pass through to the ground, meaning the play surface won’t flood.

We will generally install the permeable concrete using this method:

  • Excavate the current surface down to a 175mm depth, along with the chosen depth of wet pour surface.
  • Put PCC edges around the perimeter of the space.
  • Lay and compact 100mm of porous stone.
  • Lay and screed 75mm of no fines concrete.

Once this foundation sets and cures, we can lay the wetpour rubber flooring onto it. This leaves a strong and level finish for a safe playground facility.

Find Out More

Each of these three wetpour sub base specifications offers the right performance and safety qualities to support a playground surface. If the existing area is already porous tarmac or concrete, it is likely that we will be able to lay a wet pour system directly onto this. However, it will depend entirely on the condition on the surfacing.

Please note that the depth between the top of the edgings and the top of the base system should be no greater than the depth of the wetpour we’ll lay. This is to create a smooth and level finish for the play area surface, and to make sure that the rubber flooring meets the correct Critical Fall Height ratings.

This video below shows the full installation of a playground using wet pour graphics and a colourful design. The rubber flooring provides safety for children using the different pieces of equipment on this facility.

Unsuitable Bases for Wetpour

There are a number of surface types that we would not be able to install the wetpour playground system onto. These include:

  • Non-Porous Concrete or Tarmac – Due to the specification of wetpour being permeable, a non porous concrete or tarmac surface would not be an acceptable foundation. This is because any rainwater not be able to pass into the ground below. It would therefore sit within the layer of rubber and weaken it. As well as this it could potentially cause flooding to the play area.
  • Grass – An existing grass area would not provide the right stability as a base for wetpour. There is also the risk that grass and weeds could start to grow up through the playground surfacing if we lay it onto grass.
  • Mud – A muddy surface wouldn’t be strong enough to safely support a wet pour rubber system. However, an alternative safety surface which can be put onto mud or grass is rubber mulch and we can install this as well.

When we are installing the EPDM rubber flooring for a play area, it’s vitally important to have a suitable sub base put down beforehand. This helps to ensure the strength and durability of the play area, making certain that it lasts a long time and is safe for children to use on a daily basis.

Wetpour Rubber Surfacing Mot Type 1 Sub Base

Wetpour rubber surfacing is a safe play area surface made from EPDM rubber which provides shock absorption qualities as well as a great drainage system to reduce flooding and damage. Before the Wetpour rubber surface is laid on site the ground must be excavated down to 125mm in depth allowing the additional space for the Wet Pour Flooring. This is then filled with the compacted MOT stone after adding a geotextile which is used to stop weeds and to ensure a level finish when the rubber resin is added on top.

There are a number of colours to choose from creating a top class finish to suit many different types of area, ranging from solid colours to multi colour mixed blends. The permeable nature of both the wetpour rubber surfacing and the MOT Type 1 stone allows drainage to occur meaning no excess water is left on the surface and the risk of damage flooding is reduced. This not only increases safety of the area but also reduces the chance of possible repairs and even total resurfacing in the future.

The wetpour safety surfacing is an ideal product that can be mixed onsite to create a unique surface for children’s play areas. Playground Design

Please see the video below which shows a playground design including wetpour and artificial grass. This includes installing over mounds formed in concrete.

Please see video transcript below:

00:02 Hi, you guys. This is Dan form Soft Surfaces here, and on this video, we’re going to be showing you a wetpour and artificial grass surfacing at a primary school in Fulbourn.

00:09 Initially, here’s the groundworks and preparation that we carried out. We’re essentially removing the existing surface ready for the new one to be fitted.

00:15 As you can see from this photo here, from this mound, it’s very worn out, so what we then did is actually give that a respray and kind of freshen it up and give it a new lease of life, as you can see from these photos here.

Wetpour & Artificial Grass in Fulbourn, Cambridge

00:23 Next up, we actually install the SBR base course, which is actually the surface that goes underneath the wetpour to be fitted. You can see that being applied to the playground area there.

00:32 Then we proceed to lay down the artificial grass around the play area. This is quite a big job. There’s lots of little patches that we’re doing. Our team are actually filling that with the artificial grass there on the photos.

00:40 And then finally with the wetpour down, here’s the completed project. As you can see, it looks really, really great. They opted for a purple wetpour, which is customisable. You’re able to choose many different colors to pick from for your surface type, and they were very happy with this installation too.

00:51 From working across the United Kingdom on many different jobs we actually rank in Google for these keywords: “UK playground and fake grass company,” “synthetic turf installers for my school,” “play area safety surfacing for nurseries,” “soft playground flooring for kids,” “artificial turf for schools in the United Kingdom,” and even more than that.

01:12 So if you’d like to know more about the prices or specifications of our work please just find our website in the description of this video.
