MUGAs are often known as multi use games areas, kickabout courts, sports pitches and ATP / STPs. These games areas are often surfaced in a multitude of sports finishes but a very common surfacing in the UK is Astro – turf synthetic all weather sand filled and sand dressed artificial grass which can be used for many different sports like hockey, rugby and football.
These sports pitches all need to be maintained and looked after properly but if this is not the case, problems can occur with the surfacing. When the surface is damp and moist and poorly maintained, algal squidge, slimy residue, mud and sporn can all appear and these can severely damage the synthetic turf and it will then require severe renovation, rejuvenation, revitalisation and upgrading. This process requires the removal of the contaminated sand and then replaced with clean washed sand, filled to the correct specified depths. This sand removal involves using an air compressor to extract the sand and then replacing with new.
A high powered jet wash can also be used, however this system may not be so successful as the water may push the contaminates to the bottom of the sand pile and they will not be removed. There are other maintenance works that may be required on these surfaces from time to time and these can include the renovation of the game line marks, seam and joint repairs and patch repairs of the surfacing and Soft Surfaces Ltd have helped to maintain many of these sports courts over time.
